Walter Launt Palmer
Walter Launt Palmer was born in Albany, New York in 1854. He was the son of sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, and thus grew up around art and artists. When Palmer was in his teens, he began his formal artistic training with portraitist Charles Elliot and the famed landscape painter Frederic Church. The young artist’s work was first accepted for the National Academy of Design show in 1872, when he was only eighteen years old. Palmer traveled to Europe and studied in Paris from 1873 to 1876. While there one of his masters was Emil Auguste Carolus-Duran, whose influence is apparent in the controlled quality of Palmer’s mature works. Upon his return from France, Palmer resided in New York City for a few years, and in 1882 returned to Albany. By this time a consummate landscape painter, Palmer saw the vivid color potential of the snow and used it to great advantage. The gossamer effect he achieves in his paintings comes from his ability to capture the play between color and reflective light. The effectiveness of Palmer’s technique reflects the influence of academic precision, oriental delicacy (Palmer traveled to the Far East in 1899), and impressionist effect. In his art he was always conscious of the avant-garde and apt to experiment with color; for instance, Palmer was one of the first American painters to use blue shadows in his paintings of snow, which was, at the time, almost revolutionary. Unlike the broadly painted vistas of many of his contemporaries, Palmer imbued his interior woodland scenes with a sense of intimacy; he sought to capture the exquisite detail of the landscape and render it as an expression of a quiet moment, fixing in time one’s personal recollections of wintry beauty. Palmer’s paintings can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Butler Institute of American Art, and the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Gray's Inn, Jackson, NH by Historic Woman Artist Anna Freeland (1837-1911)
Located in New York, NY
Painted by Historic Woman Artist Anna Freeland, "Gray's Inn, Iron Mountain and Wildcat River, Jackson, NH" depicts an autumn scene in the White Mountains. Painted in oil on canvas, the work measures 12 x 18 inches and is signed and dated 1891 at the lower left. The work is framed in a period appropriate frame and ready to hang.
Anna C. Freeland (1837-1911) was born in New Hampshire to Mary Ann (Baker) and William Chamberlain. She received her education at the New Hampshire Conference Seminary and Female College in Tilton, New Hampshire. She studied art in Chicago under Walter Shirlaw, at the Académie Julian in Paris under Constant, and in Boston under William A. Rimmer and William M. Hunt.[1] An artist as well as a respected teacher, Freeland was a founder of the Worcester Art Students Club whose members included Joseph H. Greenwood and Frank J. Darrah. Incorporated in 1887, the club held meetings in the homes of its members. The club began holding meetings and exhibitions at the Worcester Art Museum following its opening in 1898.[2]
Freeland offered instruction from her Worcester studio during the Winter months, and for over a decade, spent her summer working in her Jackson, New Hampshire studio.3 Her studio adjoined Gray’s Inn, a lodging establishment popular among artists. While busy executing figurative and floral works, as well as landscape and animal subjects, Freeland continued to teach. In 1886, she instructed a class of lady artists in Jackson.[4] In 1890, Freeland contributed several floral works as well as Portrait of Baby McClure, the infant daughter of an Art Students’ Club member, to the 10th annual exhibition of the club.[5] In 1902, Freeland was the instructor at an outdoor sketch class organized by the Newton Center Woman’s club.[6] In 1910, she exhibited with local artists including Joseph H. Greenwood at the
Worcester Art Museum.[7]
During her lifetime, Freeland exhibited locally and provided art instruction to notable artists including Walter Appleton Clark...

Unframed. Image size: 14.25"H x 20.25"W
Westchiloff is an American-Russian artist. He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist, he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945.
He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline) but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects.
His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique. This, in turn, imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...
