Whitney Myron Hubbard
Field of Spring Blooms

c. 1910

About the Item

Whitney Myron Hubbard's "Field of Spring Blooms" is a delightful impressionist painting that captures the vibrant beauty and joyous spirit of springtime. This enchanting artwork immerses viewers in a sea of colorful blossoms, evoking the fresh, invigorating atmosphere of a landscape in full bloom. The painting depicts a vast field blanketed with an array of spring flowers, their petals rendered in bright, lively hues. Hubbard's impressionist technique shines through in the dynamic brushstrokes and the soft blending of colors, which create a sense of movement and life. The flowers seem to sway gently in the breeze, each one contributing to the harmonious chorus of nature. In the foreground, the flowers are painted with a delicate touch, capturing the intricate details and vibrant colors of each bloom. As the eye moves towards the background, the field stretches into a darker, hazy, dreamlike distance, where the flowers meld into a deep blue sky. The use of light and shadow enhances the depth and dimension of the scene, with the sky casting a deep glow over the field and creating playful patterns among the blossoms. Above the field, a deep blue sky provides a serene backdrop, adding to the overall sense of peace and tranquility. The sky's soft gradient from blue to light suggests a gentle spring day perhaps at dusk. "Field of Spring Blooms" is a perfect addition to any collection that appreciates the delicate charm and exuberant spirit of springtime landscapes. This painting comes in excellent condition!

By Guy Wiggins
Located in New York, NY
Guy C. Wiggins (1883 - 1962) Locomotive Train in Snowstorm, 1957 Oil on paperboard 8 x 10 inches Signed lower left; signed and dated on the reverse Guy Carleton Wiggins is best known for his impressionistic snow scenes of New York in 1920's. Wiggins lived in Old Lyme and Essex where he operated an art school. The Connecticut country-side was conducive to his impressionist technique of plein-air painting and broken brushwork.  Ironically, although his work includes many fine Connecticut landscapes, he is best remembered for some snow scenes of New York City. Like many other American Impressionists, Wiggins had one foot in the city and the other in the country (Vermont Hillside, South Londonderry).  Wiggins was born in Brooklyn, New York, went to England with his family as a boy, received an English grammar school education, and traveled widely abroad. He was the son of a prominent artist, Carleton Wiggins, a painter in the Barbizon style who studied with George Inness and admired Anton Mauve and Dwight Tryon...
