Frame is carved by and signed Wilhelm von Heydebrand; it isn't clear if he was the painter or Gertrude his future wife (married 1914) was the painting artist.
Painting is signed H. v. G. 1905 lower rignt. (H. for Heydebrand and v. for von and G. for Gertrude)
Wilhelm von Heydebrand (1888-1970) was a gold and silversmith who moved to Dornach in 1914 to help construct the Goetheanum, a building designed by Rudolf Steiner. He later became known for his craft work as a wood carver and jewelry designer. His granddaughter, Sibylle von Heydebrand, described his approach to jewelry making as involving a deep understanding of the personality of the future wearer, resulting in unique pieces that reflected their psychological nature. Duldeck, were in attics or sheds in Dornach as the value of these original items was evidently long overlooked.
On New Year's Eve 1922, the First Goetheanum in Dornach, one of the most unusual buildings of its time, burned down; Only photos still bear witness to the impression of the building, which was only recently completed. The photographs were taken by Gertrud von Heydebrand-Osthoff, who trained as a painter and was the wife of Wilhelm von Heydebrand.
Wilhelm von Heydebrand's wife, Gertrud von Heydebrand-Osthoff, was also an artist and worked as a carver at the first Goetheanum. She later became known for her photographs of Rudolf Steiner.
The Goetheanum, designed by Rudolf Steiner, was a unique building that showcased his architectural theories and incorporated elements of organic and functional design. It featured carved wood, reinforced concrete, watercolor murals, and engraved colored-glass windows, all of which aimed to visually represent the metaphysical ideas of Steiner's anthroposophy.
Anthroposophy is a philosophy that emphasizes the spiritual element and the idea that each individual has a role to play in society. It has its own scientific approach and encompasses various fields such as economics, politics, medicine, biology, agriculture, and art. Introduced by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century, anthroposophy has been criticized for its association with esoteric cults.
In the context of design, anthroposophy is also known as the Dornach Style and is characterized by an emphasis on woodwork, geometrical shapes, and graphic angles.

Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings.
He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago.
Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory.
Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy. He spent time capturing on canvas Arizona's Canyon De Chelly and Navajo horsemen traversing the region's arid tablelands. He painted California...
