About the Item

Red Sails at Honfleur by WIlliam Lee Hankey, this striking oil painting features the iconic port town of Honfleur, Normandy. Vibrant red sails command the composition, their warm hues contrasting vividly with pale sea and sky. Fishing boats rest gently on reflective water, their masts and sails mirrored beneath them. The distant harbour and townscape are softly suggested with fluid strokes, offering a balance of detail and atmosphere - typical of Hankey’s impressionistic yet realistic approach. Red Sails at Honfleur sits within a broader tradition of British artists responding to French coastal life with genteel empathy and atmospheric clarity. Honfleur - a picturesque harbour steeped in art history, was a popular subject for Hankey and other members of the Newlyn School, bridging documentary energy and poetic light. His brushwork here is confident but not ostentatious, characterised by broad, expressive strokes that evoke the sensation of light, wind, and water.
