About the Item

William Payne (1760-1830) By the Serpentine, Hyde Park Signed, dated 1821 and titled verso Oil on panel Painting size 7 x 9 in Framed size 10 x 13 in William Payne (1760–1830) was a pioneering English watercolorist and one of the key figures in the development of British landscape painting during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Exeter, Payne originally worked as a civil engineer and draughtsman, but it was his talent with watercolors that earned him lasting recognition. Payne is best remembered for popularizing new techniques in watercolor, including the use of "splitting the brush" and dragging it sideways to create textured foliage—a method that gave his landscapes a soft, atmospheric quality. He also developed a muted gray-blue tint known as Payne’s Grey, a color still widely used by artists today. His subjects often featured the rural scenery of Devon and the English countryside, depicted with a romantic, almost poetic sensibility that resonated with the growing appreciation for natural beauty in his time. Although he never became a member of the Royal Academy, Payne exhibited frequently and influenced a generation of watercolor artists. William Payne died in 1830, but his innovations helped elevate watercolor painting from a secondary medium to a respected art form in its own right.
