Vertical composition on paper with a canary yellow acrylic ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black. Layered over these central marks is a central collaged strip of paper highlighted in ultra marine blue and grey topped by a tache of white paint. This is balanced by a horizontal strip in white and grey at the foot of the composition held down by another white swipe of white acrylic. This abstraction by NY based artist Margo Margolis has a very sophisticated/playful sensibility with brilliant, intense color (yellow, red, dark green, pink, blue, turquoise, black and white) - the significant attribute of the artist's flashe medium, a water based French paint. Consisting of multiple layers of underpainting and glazing, and the frequent contrasts between hard and soft edges, these paintings not only have associations with Henri Matisse's palette and Alexander Calder's sculptural forms, but also share in these artists' complexities after relatively straightforward initial first takes. Fresh and intelligent exploration into the possibilities for abstraction are Margolis's focus, and these works achieve that rare quality of making abstraction feel new. Margo Margolis "High Dose" 2022 Flashe on Canvas 24 x 18 x 1.25 Inches This painting is unframed and framing is not necessary as the sides are painted white. It is currently on view in an exhibition of the artist's work in Wellesley, MA where it is featured in a group of works of varying sizes, small, medium, and large: 24 x 20 inches, 40 x 32 inches, 72 x 60 inches, and works on paper measuring 30 x 22 inches. Also available are a series of earlier small canvases measuring 14 x 11 inches each which also work well as groupings. Margolis’s continuing commitment to abstract painting dates back to the early 1970s when she began exhibiting with the Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York where she had several shows. In addition her work has been exhibited throughout the country at numerous galleries and institutions including The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, The Renaissance Society, The Munson-Williams Proctor Institute and Halls Walls, among others. In reviewing the artist’s 1993 exhibition in the Beth Urdang gallery for 'The Boston Globe' then chief art critic Nancy Stapen stated: “…eccentric, quasi-geometric forms and initial impression of simplicity belie this artist’s highly sophisticated grasp of paintings. These are multi- layered works concerned with the discipline’s core issues – transluscency and opacity, flatness and illusioinism, line and form, figure and ground, pattern and surface, structure and weightless pictorial space… these paintings may be analyzed up to a point. In the end, their process remains mysterious. Their appeal lies in their engagement with an inventive form language intrinsic to painting, as well as in their deft synthesis of quietude and quirkiness.” June 3, 1993 Current Chief Art Critic for 'The Boston Globe, ' Cate McQuaid, wrote of Margolis’ 2017 exhibition in the gallery: “Her marks grab at you as insistently as a toddler demanding attention. They’re like a language made purely of punctuation, rhythmic and emphatic, let out of the duty of modifying sentences, freed at last to express itself alone.” January 6, 2017 Works are included in numerous public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Amerata-Hess Corporation, General Mills, Best Products, IBM, Estee Lauder, Miami-Dade College, Chemical Bank, and Wellington Management. She is the recipient of many awards including 2 grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, a New York State Council on the Arts Grant, and Yaddo and MacDowell Residency Grants. Margolis received a BS degree from Skidmore College and an MFA from Indiana University. She lives and works in New York. The artist recently retired as Chairman of the Tyler School of Art's (Philadelphia) Department of Painting. Statement by Margo Margolis: "While text and image combine to tell the story, it is the drawing around the narrative, the space between text and image that I find compelling. In my work, it is the space between, on the periphery, in the margins that has become the foreground. It is the charged environment that has become the subject. Equally significant and transformative have been innovations in process that have evolved. Discrete marks are de-contextualized, reassembled and photocopied. They are further manipulated by exaggerations in scale, repetition and excessive layering. I have introduced 'printerly' processes (carbon tracking and stencils) that combine with marks that are hand-drawn, hand-painted. These are layered over and under transparent veils of paint. The incorporation of printing methods has been critical both formally and conceptually. These processes underline the fact that this is a system based on a 'ready-made' language. They create an identity distinctly different from action painting, gestural painting or any notion that the artists' stroke is assumed to reveal his/her psyche. These are distanced marks and frozen gestures. In combination with what is handmade, they reveal an alternate translation. Importantly, these processes, in allowing direct reproduction point to the semantic mutability of the language. However, most important is the process of building, excessive layering, and the continual dissolution and re-materialization of form. Artistic journey Early days (1970-1975) Paris (1976-2001) Quebec (2002 - present) China (2011-2016) Collectors Exhibitions 1970 jean Tannous graduates from the national superior institute of fine arts of the university of lebanon. he teaches at the same institute in 1974 and 1975. 1976 fleeing the lebanon war upon his arrival in paris, Tannous obtains the certificate of the commission of professionalism for artists & intellectual workers. affiliated with the maison des artistes, he works at the place du tertre doing portraits for tourists. during this period, Tannous masters all painting techniques, thanks to his years of experience spent in european museums doing copies of great masters. paris (1976-2001) finally Tannous settled down in paris. he participates in the creation of a fresco for the ratp in the subway, the spiral of the abbesses. he collaborates with the régie immobilière de la ville de paris and the mairie de paris. under this banner he will participate in several projects in belgium (ypres, ostende, ghent and bruges among others). in sandnes, norway, he contributes to the realization of another fresco, le pont de paris. the cartier and baume & mercier companies appeal to the talents of Tannous for their seminars. 1977 with the support of günther kaphammel, the famous german watercolourist, Tannous receives an invitation to exhibit in braunschweig at the jaeschke gallery. this is the beginning of his career in germany. Tannous collaborates with karstadt for a long time. he creates many portraits of celebrities that pose for him, such as rudi cerne, dr volker schmidt, herbert paschen and helmut marmulla. 1982 in paris, jimmy carter poses for tannous. the artist carefully keeps the thank-you letter that the former us president sends him. Tannous also portrays the former president of the ivory coast, his excellence félix houphouët-boigny and the sultan oman qabus ibn saïd. 1984 after a long period of research, Tannous discovers a new way to protect his artistic creations by covering them with an innovative varnish which quickly becomes his signature. the artist also excels in sculpture with the realization of busts. 1986 Tannous wins first prize in a painting contest held by l’île des impressionnistes. the winning work is acquired by the fournaise museum. 1987 karstadt-recklinghausen surprises the artist with a jubiläum for their ten-year collaboration. 1988 Tannous designed the entirety of the bang & olufsen home in parly 2 (chesnay-versailles). 1991 the artist founds and presides over carré ouvert, an official association of professional artists. it will be very active at the mitsukoshi gallery in paris for 9 years, performing, among other things, a decor of parisian cafés in trompe-l’oeil. 1992 carré ouvert organizes an event in carroz d'arâches with québecois artists, such as sylvain cousineau, suzelle levasseur, hanibal srouji and michel madore. the same year, paravision, chaired by raphaël berdugo, now known as europacorp, sponsors Tannous by providing him a large workshop for 8 years. from 1992 to 2000, the agency of modern art regularly represents Tannous in germany, especially in braunschweig, spain and united states. 1993 Tannous personalizes a harley-davidson for the harley-davidson convention in frankfurt (germany). 1996 in march, the artist is exhibited at the artexpo of new york, represented by the bernice jackson gallery. in july, he exhibits at the kennedy studios gallery in boston, alongside the works of hundertwasser. the next month, the caesars palace casino in atlantic city invites Tannous for a solo exhibition, for which he created twelve large formats paintings. 1997 france-okinawa elects Tannous vice-president of their association. this organization promotes relationships between france and japan. it brings okinawa’s kumi odori ballet to paris. Tannous founds europ'art, an association of experienced artists specialized in frescoes. karstadt (hambourg, germany) selects ten european painters for a major exhibition. Tannous is one of them. the artist collaborates with stephanie, an art dealer, who organizes several solo exhibitions in for him across switzerland - notably at the polo gallery, in männedorf-zürich. 1998 Tannous exhibits at porsche in fulda (germany) for a private sale reserved for their customers. the artist moves to 34 avenue des champs-élysées, where he establishes his workshop, keeping it until 2001. 1999 Tannous participates in the international kiev art festival (ukraine). in the scientific, economic and cultural guide der pfiffikus, Tannous is presented by katja gross as an innovative painter and creator of a new technique. hartmann tresore places an order to Tannous for a special edition of large safes...
