Looking at Rein Pol's work, it is first and foremost striking that the artist's subjects are very diverse. However, he was mainly known for his paintings 'with trains'. If you look further, you will see that Rein Pol has many sources of inspiration about which he can tell 'stories in paint'.
On the website of the Classical Academy in Groningen there is a beautiful teacher portrait of Rein Pol, the first part of this text comes from that site:
The fact that Rein Pol made paintings with trains in them gave him the stigma of being a train painter. The 'Blue Angel' is just one of many, often autobiographical, subjects in his paintings. This also applies to nature, landscape, persons and objects from his immediate environment, in which transience is an underlying theme. “As a child I was always drawing. The profession of art teacher appealed to me. It never occurred to me that I could become a painter.'
At the Minerva Academy, teachers such as Ger Siks and Matthijs Röling impressed him. Their influence is still noticeable in his paintings: the atmospheric of Röling and the alienating of Siks. After the academy Rein briefly taught at a secondary school. "Not an unqualified success! So when I was asked to come and teach at Minerva, I seized the opportunity with both hands. I have learned a lot myself from teaching academy students.'
A violin on fire, a train soaring to heaven, Romance at its best! The passion is in the details, the feathers of a dead bird, the drops on a misty mirror. And that passion is what Romanticism is all about.
Rein Pol has been working professionally as a painter since 1976. He always has a keen eye for the expressiveness of the apparently insignificant detail.
Every theme that Pol paints is depicted in a clear, harmonious composition with great attention to light, texture, spatial and color effects. The paintings are not intended as an exact copy of the reality around us, but as a representation of our own reality!
Hans van Seventer previously wrote: “The subjects of Rein Pol's paintings move between the ordinary and the absurd. He paints musical instruments as well as a bottle containing the fetus of a pig. Sometimes the smell of manure rises from his landscapes, then again a Groningen bum toils along the steep banks of a Norwegian fjord. His self-portraits form a collection in themselves: in the mirror of the bathroom, in a glass display case surrounded by 'gohst of the past', or simply with a jar of pickles as a sign of his dignity”.
With his work Pol is counted among the Northern Figuratives.
Rein Pol exhibits a lot in the Netherlands.
Abroad he exhibited in Germany, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and Indonesia.
With the so-called Zwiggelte Group in France, the United States, Canada and Australia.
Much of the painter's work is included in private collections. His paintings are also in the possession of, among others, the Drents Museum in Assen, the Smallingerland Museum in Drachten, the Free University of Amsterdam, the ING Collection and the Philips Collection...

Patricia Gren Hayes (American, b. 1932) is a Bay Area Figurative & Feminist Art Movement artist who studied at Winnipeg Public Art School in 1950. She received early recognition in Museum and Gallery competitions and exhibitions and was awarded a Special Education in Art recognition by the Winnipeg Museum of Fine Art, and was awarded a scholarship to the Banff College of Fine Art. Further studies were at The University of Manitoba.
She was a Member of Winnipeg Free Press Sketch Club and was a Cartoonist and paste-up for a French-English bi-weekly, in Eastern Canada;
She studied outdoor impressionism in New York in 1960; in 1962, attended The California College of Arts and Crafts, and in 1976 B.A., U.C. Berkeley where she studied under Elmer Bischoff, David Simpson, Joan Brown, Felix Ruvolo, Yolanda Lopez and Vincent Perez.
She started a freelance commercial art business in 1963; copyrighted a National Cartoon, 1976, and served as Exhibition Director for San Francisco Woman Artists Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1976-1978. She was a workshop instructor at the San Francisco Woman Artists Gallery, 1977-1985; and was Manager/Owner Stanton Art Gallery, Alameda, CA, 1976-1982.

Gleb Alexandrovich Savinov was born in Ukraine and spent part of his childhood in Saratov. His father, Alexander Ivanovich Savinov (1881–1942), a talented painter, draftsman and teacher, was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1922 they moved from Saratov to Petrograd. In 1928-1930 Savinov started working in the studio of his father while still attending school. Vita Merca Latvian artist born 1951. Her father was a conductor, her mother was fascinated with violin and entered Vita in the music world and later in fine arts. Participated in exhibitions since 1976. Member of the Artists' Union of Latvia since 1980 and member of the association "B - 13" (1993 - 1998) from 1993.

Joan Kahn (USA 1953-) grew up in New York City; Princeton, New Jersey; and Vermont; in an environment that patronized the arts. At home her father, a professor, and mother, a state economist and homemaker, collected nineteenth and twentieth century drawings and prints, Middle eastern rugs, and ceramics, pewter, and old tools. Her grandfather, Max Westfield, was an academically trained portrait painter and her great uncle was a well-known gallery owner and art dealer in pre-World War II Germany. One of the influential experiences of Joan’s youth was visiting her grandfather in his studio in Tennessee where the family had first immigrated.
Growing up near New York, and spending a year in Paris during high school, provided formative visits to museums and galleries. Joan was academically talented in grade and high school, but after her father’s death during her first years at university she found herself concentrating on studio and history of art. It was a subject above others absorbed and concentrated her focus.
Influential in Joan’s development and later work are the historic movements of the Bauhaus and Modernist design and architecture, geometric art and design of diverse cultures, Color Field Painting. The roots for Peter Kolin’s fascinating world of Surrealist Fantasy, Magic Realist images can be traced back to the art of Mannerism, a brief period - approximately 1520 to 1610 - between the Renaissance and Age of the Baroque. In Mannerist paintings composition had no focal point and space could be ambiguous. Surreal figures could be characterized by athletic bending and twisting with distortions, exaggerations, elastic elongation of the limbs, bizarre or graceful posturing and the rendering of the heads as uniformly small and oval. (reminds me very much of some of the compositions of Salvador Dali) The composition was full of clashing symbolist colors very unlike the balanced, natural and often dramatic colors of the High Renaissance. Mannerist works presented instability and restlessness and also showed a fondness for allegories with lascivious undertones. Kolin, an exceptionally gifted painter within this tradition, creates gorgeous and mysterious fantasies of Surrealism with each work opening a new and more exciting fantastic world. His narrative world of images and symbols is presented in his own metaphorical language but with a visual accuracy solidly rooted in technical perfection. Howard was born in Philadelphia and considered an important figure among contemporary African-American artists. He was educated at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. Artist Biography: Clark V. Fox was born in Austin, TX, in 1946. His father in the Army Air Forces, Clark spent the first five years of his life in Honolulu before the family moved to several cities throughout Texas, including Galveston, Houston, Corpus Christi, Hereford and Amarillo. In 1960 just before Clark entered high school, the family settled in Washington, D.C. Clark attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia, a period during which he had a studio with fellow classmates, David Lynch and Jack Fisk. Clark studied with Japanese art master Unichi Hiratsuka at the Japan-American Society of Washington, D.C. (1964-1965). Clark spent his first year of college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York (1965-66) with part-time stints at Andy Warhol’s “The Factory” studio, after which he returned to D.C., where he received his BFA in 1969 from the Corcoran School of Art.
