Rain Showers
Located in Mill Valley, CA
Leslie Allen is a painter’s painter. She approaches the canvas without preconceived notions and allows the process to guide her through the painting. She immerses herself in the development of the painting as it occurs, responding to every mark with a keenly developed improvisational style. Allen relishes the pure color and movement of oil paint on the surface. She “listens” to the paint. She has worked out her own visual language through years of experimentation and exploration. These are sophisticated paintings with a keen sense of color, gesture and division of space. "Rain Showers...

Intuitive
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Carl Smith is an American artist who has been living in Berlin, Germany, since 2001. He works with a combination of silkscreen printing, collage, and resin to create his urban inspired artworks. In his art Smith explores the area between Pop Art and Surrealism. Each carefully constructed artwork is a unique compilation of images and text brought together to create an interesting juxtaposition that excites the viewer. The surface of this 16 inch square artwork is covered with a smooth layer of clear, glass-like resin, which enhances the colors and adds depth to the imagery. The sides are finished natural wood, and it does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the back. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Convenient local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental US and international shipping is available. Smith combines his own photographic material with drawings and other fragments of narrative imagery. He works with several layout combinations before creating a finished composition. Through his use of strong visual cues, he tells slightly absurd and humorous visual anecdotes. The process of making these narrative works is what Smith refers to as, 'Drawing with Pictures'. Carl Smith is originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and studied art at Cooper Union in New York. He has exhibited his work in France, Germany, Norway, Holland, USA and England in numerous solo shows or as a member of a four man team called TABI. His works have been represented by Kunstwarenhaus Zurich since 2000 and Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles since 2010. He was chosen as one of five artists who exhibited at the Berliner Liste, invited to exhibit in the 2012 Paris Mac art fair as a featured guest of the organizers. Better Alone than in Bad Company
Located in New Orleans, LA
after: Joseph Shuster’s Action Comics #1 Cover (1938) and #19 Burning Flesh from Wally Wood’s, Bob Powell’s, and Norm Saunders’ Mars Attacks trading cards (1962) Framed: 9h x 9w in Continuing the exploration of Superman’s role as extraterrestrial anomaly – an alien who’s also a friend, I spent time considering how important one’s actions (on a singular occasion, in sum, alone, in collaboration with others, etc.) are in determining overall “goodness” or social value. In literally his first exposure to any reader, on the cover of Action Comics #1, Superman is shown smashing a large car against a rock, while three well-dressed men run away in fear. Taken by itself the image presents a deranged, super-strong vandal. It’s only upon reading the full narrative that we understand Superman’s action to be part of a rescue mission and the men to be gangster villains. When we allow Superman to be considered as an individual, responsible for his own actions, and over a series of events, rather than one incident, we find our hero. But when I offer Superman another alien (this one up to no good), and deny any exposure to a fuller understanding of circumstance, it’s much more difficult to separate Superman’s destructive actions from those of his new companion. Better Alone Than in Bad Company...

FAT BACK WITH TATTOOS - Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Painting, textural
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Fat Back with Tattoos" is part of the latest on-going series from Eleanor Aldrich. These "behind the lawn chair" vantage points provide Aldrich with the perfect subject matter to convey her mixed media approach. More info below: Eleanor Aldrich was born in Springerville, Arizona. A participant at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, she also holds an MFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she currently lives. She earned her BFA in Painting & Drawing through the Academie Minerva (Groningen, the Netherlands) and Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. She was a participant in the Drawing Center’s first Open Sessions. Eleanor has had solo shows in Boston, Nashville, Knoxville, Flagstaff, AZ, and at the University of Alabama. Her work has been shown at Saltworks Gallery (Atlanta, GA), the Drawing Center (New York, NY), Grin (Providence, RI) and Ortega y Gasset (New York, NY). Her work was chosen for 1708 Gallery’s ‘FEED 2013’ (Richmond, VA). She has been awarded an Endowment for the Arts through the Whiteman Foundation, and the Herman E. Spivey Fellowship. Her work has been included in New American Paintings and on Artforum. Aldrich's work is textural and alchemical; she matches materials – often industrial sealants – and techniques to the subject matter they look like, thereby approaching a likeness without realistic rendering. She attributes her appreciation of mystery and the possibility of transformation in her work to her Catholic upbringing, in which materials were transformed and images held power over life. Her work intersects modernist painting, her own experiences, and the physicality of the body. Sometimes her work is about the application – paint is combed, piped, sprinkled and sprayed, reflecting traditional feminine work and crafts. Often the subject matter acts as a metaphor. The lines of a lawn chair seat serves as a veiled reference to the grid, and its breakdown – presumably by human weight – to an imagined encounter with the human body. *Make sure to use the "view in a room...

Vision Quest - colorful blurred stripe abstract contemporary oil painting
Located in New York, NY
Dintino's abstract oil paintings have to do with the melding of title and piece. His paintings all illustrate his ideas and words through visuality and color. Creating large panoramic pieces makes his work atmospheric and immersive, allowing the viewer to literally feel the title of his painting. This is quite a synesthetic approach to making art and allows ideas and words to sing. Born in San Francisco, California in 1964, Patrick Dintino grew up in Sunnyvale, in the south bay area. He went to college in San Diego earning a BA degree in Industrial Arts from San Diego State University, and co-founded Artists in Motion...

Sunset
Located in New Orleans, LA
Triangle with 18 inch sides Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...
