Contemporary French Fauvist Impressionist Landscape, Le Crépuscule. Pastel.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Contemporary Fauvist Impressionist pastel of colourful landscape by Belgian artist Francis Besson. Signed to the very bottom right and presented in a custom white wood and patinated frame. A magnificent colourscape of reds, russets, blues, oranges and black. Whirls of colour shape this gorgeously sumptuous pastel of a landscape. The contrast between colour, light and shade make for a wonderfully impactful composition. The use of pastel softens the whole effect and gives an impressionistic feeling. Besson was born in Dundee (Scotland) in 1943 however as a young child moved to Belgium where he later became famous as an actor. His family kept a second home in Cotignac in Provence which he visited often until finally going to live there himself in the early 2000s. Francis Besson now lives and works in the beautiful village of Cotignac in Provence in the south of France. His often impressionistic almost pointillist work is inspired by the nature he sees around him in this lovely part of the world. The intensity of the light , the rocks and forests of Provence all feature in his paintings. He is known for both landscapes and abstract works and has often collaborated with other local artists. Le crépuscule...

Ballerina in the dressing room
Located in Berlin, DE
Karl Stohner (1894 Mannheim - 1957 Paris), Ballerina in the dressing room, 1924. Pastel on painting cardboard, 65 x 45 cm, 77,5 x 59,5 (frame), signed lower left "Stohner" and dated "[19]24". Behind glass in gold stucco frame of the time. - Painting cardboard slightly warped, in the lower area minimally stained, frame with age patina and traces of abrasion. - The Naturalness of Artificiality - We see a ballerina putting on her right ballet shoe while the left one is still lying on the floor in front of her. It is precisely the casualness of the scene that gives it its intimacy: the blonde young woman is completely absorbed in the activity of getting ready for the dance, oblivious to us, while we are positioned right in front of her in the dressing room, inaccessible to the audience, watching her dress. Even though she does not yet perform a dance step, there is a graceful elegance in the action shown that seems quite natural in contrast to the rehearsed art form of dance. The young woman is not presenting herself to an audience in a perfectly formed movement, but is performing an everyday action, unaware that she is being watched. Concentrated, almost devotional, she pulls the ballet slipper over the verses, not noticing that one of the straps of the tutu has slipped off her shoulder, reinforcing the erotic moment of the scene. Inspired by Edgar Degas, Karl Stohner has painted the scene in strong pastel tones. The dominant blues and turquoises give the scene a magical, mysterious quality and, like the pink of the stockings and ballet slippers, are borrowed from Degas's dancers. Degas's colors, however, are cooler tempered, which is particularly evident in the light impasto applied incarnate. This is where the vividness of Auguste Renoir comes into play, making the dancer seem entirely flesh and blood. Karl Stohner, who has studied the pastels of Degas and Renoir intensively, combines the two artists here to create his own pictorial language. He has laid out the background in broad layers of strokes, ranging in color from white to turquoise to dark blue. The result is a dynamic, pattern-like structure that contrasts with the woman's calm, inward-looking posture. The fund anticipates the dynamics of the choreography of the dance for which the ballerina is preparing. At the same time, the broad pastel line in the background is an adequate means of painting to depict the soft, flowing elegance of the dancer. About the artist Against the wishes of his wealthy parents, Karl Stohner decided to become a painter. His talent was discovered by the director of the Mannheim Art Gallery, Fritz Wichert, who supported him from then on, including financing study trips to Paris. There he discovered the art of Degas, Cézanne and Renoir, which inspired his work.

Artist Statement on “Houseplants” series: The following project began towards the end of 2017. The transition from my previous work (abstract expressionist paintings that explored processes related to my athletic practice) may seem spontaneous, but it was something that happened quite naturally for me after an ankle injury I suffered in June of that year. From a very active daily routine I was forced quite abruptly into a sedentary one. While being inactive was a circumstance that made me feel very uncomfortable and uneasy not only physically, but also emotionally, it was one that is so common - and comfortable - for the ever expanding digital society. Without realizing that I was beginning a new body of work I was drawn by a deep urge to painting humans as some sort of inanimate object. A houseplant I thought, a wild organism domesticated. I had a few ideas for the figures in mind and knew the composition would be set in an environment that can neither be recognized as indoor or outdoor, but without clear ideas of the final pieces. Having only rough pencil sketches to start from allowed the work to have elements of spontaneity and life, but also required perseverance to see them through to an unknown end. I experiment directly on the canvas with form and color until the subjects feel right (not necessarily anatomically, but rather aesthetically). Thereon changes continue until, upon stepping away from the work, the sum of its elements evoke a sense of harmony; sometimes on purpose, sometimes by mistake. This is in many ways a continuation of the processes I practiced in my previous work, only applied to a new subject. By embracing mistakes, and responding to aesthetic decisions on the canvas directly the painting begins to form harmony through trial and error, building simultaneously texture and depth, and maintaining an expressive quality. Study for the Spring (preparatory to the Four Seasons) by René-Marie Castaing
Located in PARIS, FR
René-Paris Castaing, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1924, left a large body of work, both sacred and secular. Many churches in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in South-West France still bear witness to the diversity of his talent. In 1942, he began a major decoration project for the Château de Diusse, in the north-east of the county, including an allegory of the four seasons. The vigorous pastel we are presenting here is a study for Spring, depicted as Flore undressing. This commission was a veritable swan song for the artist, who died a year later at the age of 47. 1. René-Marie Castaing, the great inter-war painter in Pau René-Marie Castaing was born in Pau on December 16th 1896. His father, Joseph Castaing, was also a painter: he was the official portraitist of Pau's high society, which was particularly cosmopolitan at the end of the century, when many rich foreigners spent the winter in Pau, taking advantage of the mild weather to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle punctuated by hunting, horse ridings and golf. René-Marie Castaing was admitted to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in April 1920 and entered the studio of Paul-Albert Laurens (1870-1934). In 1924, he was awarded the First Grand Prix de Rome for Painting, which earned him a stay at the Villa Médicis for more than three years. He then returned to Pau in 1928, where he lived until his death. Castaing's work is marked by the academic tradition, in which drawing plays as important a role as painting. Although his drawings are often sketches that help to set up large painted compositions, they stand as independent artworks in which the artist fully expresses the vivacity of his talent. Castaing was a fervent Christian and religious painting played an essential part in his work, as shown by the decorations he created for the churches of Bizanos, Borce, Bidache and Salies-de-Béarn. The painter also created several secular decorations, such as that for the dining room of the Villa Saint-Basil's in Pau in 1935, and the Hunting at the Albret’s time commissioned in 1940 by the Prefecture of Pau. The décor created in 1942-1943 for the Château de Diusse, a mansion located north-east of Pau, was his last large-scale décor, as the painter died shortly after its completion on December 8th 1943. 2. Description of the drawing Our pastel depicts an eminently secular theme: Spring is embodied by Flore, crouching on the ground with one knee touching the ground. She reveals her ample bosom by removing her shirt, her arms raised above her shoulders to undress. Given Castaing's classical training at the Beaux-Arts and the influence of ancient statuary...

Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Untitled, Figurative, Ink, Brush, Dry Pastel on Paper Jogen Chowdhury "In Stock"
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Jogen Chowdhury - Untitled, 14 x 11 inches ( Unframed Size ) Ink with Brush & Dry Pastel on Paper, 2014 Style : He has immense contribution in inspiring young artists of India. Jogen Chowdhury had developed his individual style after his return from Paris. Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised - the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background: His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury's father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board. Education: 1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. 1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17. Professional Experience: 1968-72 : He worked as an Art-Designer, Madras Handloom Board, Madras. 1970 : A collection of his poems were published, titled 'Hridoy Train Beje Othey'. 1987 : Joined Kala Bhavan , Santiniketan as a professor of painting. His most famous paintings are in ink, watercolor and pastel. He has painted in oil medium as well. In Chowdhury’s more recent works the sensory experiences of cloth, bolsters, sofas and the human body are cross-projected to produce an uncanny world of tran-substantiated tumescence and flaccidness. Jogen Chowdhury Face of a Young Man, Dry Pastel on Paper 7 x 9.25 inches , 2022 (unframed size ) The framed size of the work is 17 x 20 ( approx. ) The work will be shipped inclusive of framing. Signed in Bengali Style : He has immense contribution in inspiring young artists of India. Jogen Chowdhury had developed his individual style after his return from Paris. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised – the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms.
