Gouache on paper signed en verso Throughout his sixty-year artistic career, David Hayes created sculptural forms abstracted from organic forms encountered in daily life. He first studied with American sculptor David Smith, who was among the first to work with welded steel. Hayes' sculptures have affinities to Alexander Calder's playful stabiles (Hayes met Calder in Paris) and to the shapes and colors of Matisse's late paper cutouts. Hayes works are firmly rooted in modern artists' interests in industrial materials and in commercial fabrication processes. He has had more than 400 exhibitions of his work. His work is in more than 70 museum collections, including MOMA and the Guggenheim. Throughout his career, Hayes painted models for his sculptures and sculptural-like landscapes of the geography surrounding his home in Northwestern Connecticut. In these landscapes, the gently rolling hills become modernist forms and shapes, recognizable as landscapes but also as explorations of shape and color. Matted size: 27.5 x 20 inches Signature: Signed lower right Condition: Very good Unframed This watercolor is by Evelyne Brigeois (1946-2016) a very well-known Boise, Idaho artist. It depicts a beautiful window with flowers in pots in Guanajuato, Mexico. As with many of her paintings, Brigeois pays particular attention to light and shadow. The painting is in very good condition with no flaws to note. The painting is signed in the lower right corner and dated underneath the mat, “80.”. It is custom matted with three hinges on the top edge of the art. Born in France in 1946, Evelyne Brigeois was an internationally acclaimed watercolor artist. Having grown up in a small town east of Paris, Brigeois was particularly drawn to places which seem to have preserved their timeless and peaceful aspect. Gobardhan Ash - Untitled - Gouache on Paper 10 x 15 inches (unframed size) Style : Regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art, Ash’s contribution at the time when India witnessed the advent of Western modernism is significant and colossal. His work was exploratory, visionary and inspiring. He printed with bold courage and a free spirit, never yielding to the rules set by official art. He rejected the preconceived notions of how an artist ought to render his subjects and inevitably rebelled against the academic rules “ If we look at nature in the open, we do not see individual objects each with its own colors but rather a bright medley of tints which blend in our eyes, in our minds.” – Gobardhan Ash (The Statesman, April 24, 1994). His verbal imagery alluded to what was real and relevant in India yet transcended to communicate a deeper, universal message about the human spirit. Disillusioned with the limits and constraints he faced, Ash withdrew into his private introspective world to explore his own mode of artistic expression. And although it was the convention then to paint divinities or exotic female figures on their way to the temple, Ash embarked on a new approach altogether to paint farmers toiling in the fields, workers engaged in intense labor to earn their living, thereby setting a new trend of socio-realistic art in India. In 1945, Ash was brought into the public eye when the progressive writers Association discovered his series of paintings on the Bengal famine. The paintings depict, if not document, the ravages of the 1943 catastrophe. In juxtaposition to the famine series, his impressionist and post impressionist gouaches during the late 40s come as an interesting antithesis. Colors, rich and vibrant, come alive in a pulsating tone to dominate the entire painting. Ash never subscribed to a stringent artistic form or technique. Rather, his works from the 80s display yet another intriguing and jarringly different style in his treatment of portraiture. His colors, with the exception of the apparent outlines, are reduced to smudges and smears so that the painting appear to originate from stained canvas. His subjects, spectral figures that engage and draw us within their profound state of despair and helplessness. To characterize the life works of Gobardhan Ash is to recognize the complexity and spontaneity of his ideas and the enormous richness of his style. An artist who devoted his entire life to art, his paintings have transited and evolved from monochromatic sketches and landscape to portraiture; from naturalistic real-life depictions to abstract expressionism. Whatever the genre style-Ash has demonstrated an eloquent mastery over the diverse style, techniques and medias employed, as evident in the vast retrospective collection. His paintings are conceptual and purposeful, displaying a unique individuality. His art expounds a frank desire to convey the value of uncompromising artistic sincerity. Gobardhan Ash remains today a prolific artist of his time. The handmade paper is cut somewhat irregularly as per the artists intentions. Stanley Boxer (1926-May 8, 2000) was an American abstract expressionist artist best known for thickly painted abstract works of art. He was also an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. He received awards from the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts. Boxer was born in New York City, and began his formal education after World War II, when he left the Navy and studied at the Art Students League of New York. He drew, painted, made prints, and sculpted. His work was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg, who categorized him as a color field painter, A group that included Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko and was a form of Abstract Expressionism and later included Helen Frankenthaler, Ad Reinhardt, Kenneth Noland, Gene Davis, Jules Olitski, Raymond Parker and Morris Louis. Boxer himself was adamant in rejecting this stylistic label. Over the years, he remained loyal to the materially dense abstract mode on which his reputation rested.. Art critic Grace Glueck wrote "Never part of a movement or trend, though obviously steeped in the language of Modernism, the abstract painter Stanley Boxer was a superb manipulator of surfaces, intensely bonding texture and color." In 1953 Boxer had his first solo exhibition of paintings in New York City, and showed regularly thereafter until his death. His paintings and sculpture were represented in New York City during the late 1960s through 1974 by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, then by the André Emmerich Gallery from 1975 until 1993, and finally by Salander-O'Reilly Galleries until its demise in 2007. Yuri Larin, also Yuriy Larin (1936–2014) is a Russian painter and graphic artist, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1977. Larin was born in Moscow to the family of a key Soviet political leader, Nikolay Bukharin, and Anna Larina. Following the arrests of his parents in 1938 and until 1946, he lived with his relatives, and following the arrest of his step-father, he was taken to an orphanage near Stalingrad. A hydraulic engineer by training, he worked at the construction of the Saratov Hydro-Electric Plant and at design institutions. In 1960, he began his studies at the department of drawing and painting of the Krupskaya People’s University of Arts, and then, from 1965 until 1970, he studied at the department of art design at the Moscow State Higher School of Arts and Industry (the former Stroganov Institution). His career as a professional artist began in the early 1970s. From 1970 until 1986, he taught at the Moscow 1905 Memorial Arts School. His letter to prof. Vittorio Strada sent in 1980 contained the first statement of his artistic method he would later dub the “concept of the limit state”. He quit teaching after a serious illness, when he lost the ability to use his right hand. He only worked with his left hand since 1986. He died and was buried in Moscow. As a turning point in the artist’s career was a period when he worked at the House of Creativity “Cheluskinskaya” near Moscow. Starting from this period landscapes, portraits and still-lifes are drawn from memory. Using only some pencil sketches that are done from real life. Long walks around the neighborhoods of Cheluskinskaya, trips to Abramtsevo, Klazma served as a strong impetus to the development of cycle of Moscow region landscapes. 1977 Became part of Moscow Union of Artists in USSR. “Watercolors of Y.B.Larin are the world of senciar relationships between the artist and nature. The plots of his works are extremely simple, unsophisticated, but behind all that there is a whole concept: the living nature is shaped by the eyes of the artist into one-piece space masses, human creations as ships, cranes, bridges get soft, kind forms; dissolved they become part of complete, modern and artistically convincing form” (V.A.Volkov. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) “Yuriy Borisovich Larin appears to me as a serious and deep artist,... mature artist. His watercolors are of proof of having coloristic gift, high culture and material understanding” (M.P.Miturich. From the reference given to Y.Larin to become part of Moscow Union of Artists in 1975) 1977 Yuriy Larin directs a group of young Moscow artists in their trip to Olskiy area of Magadan region. Creates a series of landscapes of Magadan nature. 1980 In the letter to V.Strada finally justifies the theoretical part of his artistic method, later calls it the concept of limit state. The end of the 1970s - the beginning of the 1980s Devoted four years to the translation of the book of S.Cohen, professor of Princeton University, about N.I.Bukharin. Ye.A.Gnedin was helping him to translate the book, they were meeting every Thursday. Afterwards, while publishing the Russian version of the book in the USA the translators Y.LArin and Ye.Gnedin were credited under pseudonyms Ye. and Y. Chetvergovy. Yevgeniy Alexandrovich Gnedin is a prominent Soviet diplomat, staff member of M.M. Litvinov, died in 1983. Y.Larin considers him to be one of the most incredible people of the XX century. Meets famous collectionner from Moscow Ya.Ye. Rubinshtein, who buys six works of the artist (oil and watercolor); Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1980 The artist creates the cycle of the watercolors of Moscow region in winter, the part of which will be purchased by Ya.Ye. Rubinstein and the Russian Museum; V.Volkov indicated in the works “a new approach to the light” Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1982 First own exhibition in Moscow Drama Theatre after M.N.Yermolova (together with Ye.N.Kravchenko). Mostly presented the paintings of the last decade that were painted in the central Russia, Krasnodar and Magadan regions. The exhibition and the discussion that took place afterwards helped to open up Y.Larin. He met the ambassador of Italy to USSR Giovanni Migliuolo and became friends for a long period of time. 1979-1985 Within a few years during summer vacations Yuriy Larin works in Baltic. Creates a cycle of graphic watercolors on German paperboard. The landscapes on the constructive base greatly differ from Moscow and Caucasus cycles. Fall, 1983 Trip to Armenia with his close friend Yu.M. Garushyants, historian. The result of that trip were thirty watercolor papers that continued the Caucasus cycle. 1985 In the almanac “Soviet Graphic” there is a publication about the watercolors of the artist that was written by G. Yelshevskaya. December, 1985 Underwent the neurosurgery; as a consequence the loss of strength and skill in his right hand. 1987 Death of his wife Inga Ballod  First personal exhibition overseas: exhibition of watercolors in the gallery Books&Company Art, NY, USA. Elvira Bach was born on 22 June 1951 in Neuenhain in Hesse, West Germany. She grew up with her twin sister Ingrid in a rural setting. Yuri Larin, also Yuriy Larin (1936–2014) is a Russian painter and graphic artist, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1977. Larin was born in Moscow to the family of a key Soviet political leader, Nikolay Bukharin, and Anna Larina. Following the arrests of his parents in 1938 and until 1946, he lived with his relatives, and following the arrest of his step-father, he was taken to an orphanage near Stalingrad. A hydraulic engineer by training, he worked at the construction of the Saratov Hydro-Electric Plant and at design institutions. In 1960, he began his studies at the department of drawing and painting of the Krupskaya People’s University of Arts, and then, from 1965 until 1970, he studied at the department of art design at the Moscow State Higher School of Arts and Industry (the former Stroganov Institution). Larin was born in Moscow to the family of a key Soviet political leader, Nikolay Bukharin, and Anna Larina. Following the arrests of his parents in 1938 and until 1946, he lived with his relatives, and following the arrest of his step-father, he was taken to an orphanage near Stalingrad. A hydraulic engineer by training, he worked at the construction of the Saratov Hydro-Electric Plant and at design institutions. In 1960, he began his studies at the department of drawing and painting of the Krupskaya People’s University of Arts, and then, from 1965 until 1970, he studied at the department of art design at the Moscow State Higher School of Arts and Industry (the former Stroganov Institution). His career as a professional artist began in the early 1970s. From 1970 until 1986, he taught at the Moscow 1905 Memorial Arts School. His letter to prof. Vittorio Strada sent in 1980 contained the first statement of his artistic method he would later dub the “concept of the limit state”. As a turning point in the artist’s career was a period when he worked at the House of Creativity “Cheluskinskaya” near Moscow. Starting from this period landscapes, portraits and still-lifes are drawn from memory. Using only some pencil sketches that are done from real life. Long walks around the neighborhoods of Cheluskinskaya, trips to Abramtsevo, Klazma served as a strong impetus to the development of cycle of Moscow region landscapes. 1977 Became part of Moscow Union of Artists in USSR. “Watercolors of Y.B.Larin are the world of senciar relationships between the artist and nature. Creates a series of landscapes of Magadan nature. 1980 In the letter to V.Strada finally justifies the theoretical part of his artistic method, later calls it the concept of limit state. The end of the 1970s - the beginning of the 1980s Devoted four years to the translation of the book of S.Cohen, professor of Princeton University, about N.I.Bukharin. Ye.A.Gnedin was helping him to translate the book, they were meeting every Thursday. Afterwards, while publishing the Russian version of the book in the USA the translators Y.LArin and Ye.Gnedin were credited under pseudonyms Ye. and Y. Chetvergovy. Yevgeniy Alexandrovich Gnedin is a prominent Soviet diplomat, staff member of M.M. Litvinov, died in 1983. Y.Larin considers him to be one of the most incredible people of the XX century. Meets famous collectionner from Moscow Ya.Ye. Rubinshtein, who buys six works of the artist (oil and watercolor); Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1980 The artist creates the cycle of the watercolors of Moscow region in winter, the part of which will be purchased by Ya.Ye. Rubinstein and the Russian Museum; V.Volkov indicated in the works “a new approach to the light” Fall, 1981–1982 Again works at the House of Creativity “Goryachiy Klyuch”. As a result the Caucasus series are enlarged with first oil works. The long contact with the nature of Caucasus influenced greatly the creative development of the artist. 1982 First own exhibition in Moscow Drama Theatre after M.N.Yermolova (together with Ye.N.Kravchenko). Gary Hansmann (1947-2008) was active/lived in California. He is known for abstract, Surrealism figure painting. Gary William Hansmann was born Dec. 4, 1940, in San Diego to Ethel May Williams and Lester Hughes Hansmann. He grew up in Encinitas and served in the Army in the early 1960s. Gary Hansmann, San Diego artist, teacher and gallery owner, was known for his Surrealist nude and animal drawings and graphics. He spent time working in Paris and exhibiting his art throughout Europe, but San Diego was home until he moved to Washington state. His life partner was fellow artist, Jill Hosmer. Mr. Hansmann, a respected printmaker and prolific artist, created thousands of drawings, prints and paintings as well as hundreds of poems. His interest in bullfighting led to a book of poetry and illustrations on the subject, “La Corrida, The Run”, a collection of poetry & artwork written as he was preparing for his first bullfight. Prologue written by famous Mexican Matador Antonio Lomelin. The book is written in English and translated into Spanish on opposing pages and was published in 1983. Mr. Hansmann taught intaglio and monotype at the Academy of Fine Arts in San Diego from 1977 to 1980 and at the San Diego Museum of Art in 1980. He also gave lectures and demonstrations throughout the art community, including at the San Diego Art Guild in Del Mar and Artist Equity in San Diego. Although he attended Palomar College in San Marcos and studied lithography at the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts, Mr. Hansmann was mostly self-taught and self-educated. Mr. Hansmann had shows in several art-world capitals, including Paris; Lisbon, Portugal; Cologne, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and New York. he had one-person exhibits at the Loft Gallery in Clarkston, the Lewis-Clark State College Center of Arts & History, the Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla and the Valley Art Center in Clarkston. During his long, distinguished career as an artist he had numerous one-person exhibits all over the world and the United States. His group shows are too numerous to mention, but his one-person exhibits were in Koln, Germany; Bruxelles, Belgium; Paris, France; Viana do Castelo, Portugal; Lisbon, Portugal; Tecate, Mexico; and British Columbia, Canada; and many states at home.
