Jacob Dhein was interested in art as a child. Crayons and colored pencils were his tools of expression. He spent hours intricately crafting drawings of comic book heroes and animals. By the time he graduated from high school, one of his drawings was exhibited on the wall of a local bank. It wasn't until he was a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh that he decided to take a drawing class. He found this so compelling that he continued with sculpture and painting. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts and then, for two years, at the Argentine Institute of Graphic Arts, guided by the painter Lino Spilimbergo. He exhibited for the first time in 1939 as a member of the Orión Group. Starting in 1946 he exhibited individually and in various salons, obtaining numerous rewards, among them: ?? Enrique Cabré Moré ?? Painting Prize; First Prize National Hall of Bahía Blanca; Second Prize for Drawing XXXVII Annual Salon of Watercolorists; ?? Raúl Castellví ?? Painting Prize, XXVI Annual Salon of Santa Fe; Acquisition Prize First Salon of La Rioja, and First Prize of Drawing Salon de Acuarelistas. In 1959 he won the Grand Prize at the National Hall, the Mar del Plata Hall and the Municipal Hall. In 1963 the National Academy of Fine Arts awarded him the Dr. Augusto Palanza Prize.
In 1950-51, he visited Spain, France, Italy, and England; in 1955-56 he traveled to the US and in 1966-67 he traveled to Spain, Portugal, France and Belgium. James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. His mother, Ann Darro, was an opera singer with the Chicago Civic Opera. In addition, three of Tom's uncles served as art directors for various organizations.

The nude as an artist’s subject gained prominence in ancient Greece, wherein male nudes were rendered equivalent to power and victory owing to the Greeks’ celebration of men in athletic events as well as in the worship of the gods who populate Greek mythology. Nude sculptures in Greece positioned men as warriors — strong, moral and fearless. The naked female figures featured in prehistoric art and the art of ancient civilizations, on the other hand, were symbols of fertility and procreation.

Censorship was the order of the day, except for religious-themed works, such as 1526’s iconic Adam and Eve, an oil painting made by German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, one of more than 50 works made in his workshop based on the biblical story. Tuscan painter Daniele da Volterra was famously hired to paint fig leaves over the most exposed figures of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. While freedom of expression for artists has expanded significantly since then, prudish censorship persists when it comes to Renaissance nudity.
