About the Item

This is a one of a kind original oil painting by San Diego artist, Julia San Roman. Its dimensions are 41" x 61" x 1.5". It is framed as pictured. A certificate of authenticity will follow delivery. This is a figurative surrealist work depicting a nude figure. In BRIEF, my most recent evolution in representing the figure, I focus on the brevity and fragility of human existence. The contemplation of personal loss led me to confront profound questions: is there meaning to our existence, or is it absurd? Here, the figures, while readily defined, become more fragile, transient and lyrical, nearly dissolving into a timeless space. To create this vanishing effect, I depict the figure at different levels of description, where the less defined part of the rendition looks somehow pixilated. It is my way of expressing loss of description, fading away, in this digital age. So, I am not only using form to describe the concept of the ephemeral but to reflect the times in which we live, where the virtual is almost becoming reality and where more and more “quickly” is the way in which we encounter things. The natural resolution of my style as a digitalized pattern reflects the stylistic vertical and horizontal traits of my own calligraphy. All expressed in a lyrical way, because it is my essence, at times I like to include foreign elements in the composition (i.e. Roosters; or a sharp horizon line) like noise disrupting the lyrical harmony, an expression of the absurd. It is also my way of generating compositional balance and contrast to the figure, both formally and conceptually. And this is not just a way of looking but a reminder that time is of the essence and that we should appreciate and revel in the present because we are not here forever. All expressed in a lyrical way, because it is my essence, at times I like to include foreign elements in the composition (i.e. Roosters; or a sharp horizon line) like noise disrupting the lyrical harmony, an expression of the absurd. It is also my way of generating compositional balance and contrast to the figure, both formally and conceptually. And this is not just a way of looking but a reminder that time is of the essence and that we should appreciate and revel in the present because we are not here forever.

Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. The title 'Hello Hen !' ( Hen being the scottish slang for 'girl' ) is used playfully as a double-entendre. In the image we see the artist has before him a beautiful naked woman and yet chooses to paint the real hen. Also we notice that the plant's flower heads under the woman are wilting and the artist pictured (a self portrait of Docherty), an older man, suggest that the artist's desires are on the wane. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.)
