Marc Barker'Tethered' Contemporary Figurative Oil on Panel Painting by Marc Barker2003
2003
About the Item
'Tethered' is a contemporary monochromatic oil on panel painting from Marc Barker's "Illusion of Mattering" series. The painting features two central figures - a dark, shadowed large figure, presumably male, behind a lighter female figure whose torso comes into view but the facial features do not. They represent the psychological symbols of anima and animus.
The two stand stationery with a full frontal position in the center of the panel drawing the viewer into their shadowed world of reflection and intrigue. The painting is framed with a black contemporary wooden frame.
"My education was in mathematics, limnology and art. I revere nature and question my place within it, the Mystery, prismatic sunsets and sensuous memories exploring, surveying and photographing caves with their invented light, solitude, and deafening silence. I transform these experiences into psychologically contemplative subjects including shadow figures, asterisms, cloudscapes, political mixed media and abstractions."-- Marc Barker
Marc Barker has over 35 years experience in the arts and over 25 years experience teaching and producing in the field of interactive media. He managed Paseo Intaglio Printers in the late 1980s and continued into the 90s with editioning and contract printing for local and national artists. He was selected as 2004 Festival of the Arts juror for the Arts Council of Oklahoma City and helped create the Artful Experience Committee for the Arts Council of Oklahoma City. He chaired that committee for its first two years which taught principles of printmaking to festival goers through exhibits and demonstrations. He was the guest juror for the 2009 Paseo Festival of the Arts and the Goddard Center 47th Annual Competition in 2019. Marc was the Allied Artist representing the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and had an exhibit in the State Capitol of Oklahoma’s East Gallery in 2008 with one of his works chosen for the Oklahoma State Art Collection at the State Capitol.

'Can Hats Favor Fire? Can a Hat Aspire to Higher Things?, ' by Mark Gilmore
By Mark Gilmore
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
The full frontal female figure is suspended in mid-air with both arms in motion, seemingly about to jump off the canvas. The blurred figure is set against a clear, graphic backdrop of reds, black and other dark tones with a turquoise rectangular box framing the torso of the figure. A simple black wooden frame frames the work.
"I have been active in telling stories with images for over 45 years. My fascination with shapes and textures are my earliest memories and everything I have done in my adult life has revolved around these interests. I learned a lot about color, composition and story telling by stripping all sentimentality from these elements and using them for more than 25 years as a designer. Although I enjoy the challenge and variety of commissions, my own work is very personal. My work has always been about expressing the otherness and mystery just underneath everyday life. Reacting to the ephemeral nature of life and mortality. All of my personal paintings are just different ways of expressing one moment, one feeling. I’m describing a place I’ve never been with a language I’ve never spoken but I’ve spent my whole life trying to get there because its my home." -- Mark Gilmore...

Maureen Reclining - Original Oil Painting, Nude Female in Slippers, Lush Fabrics
By Andrew S. Conklin
Located in Chicago, IL
This classically painted nude model study demonstrates the artists understanding of the human figure. Surrounded by loosely painted lush fabrics, the model lies in a reclining position, her eyes closed, wearing only a pair of slippers. The quick, confident brush strokes in the background, combined with deft handling of paint in the figure combine to make this a painting for all time.

Motion Capture Paintings, Chicago
My recent painting series describes the reality of motion capture environments by showing the interplay between female athletes and male technicians. These paintings are meant to explore conventions of female representation in Western figurative art and to contrast this past practice with the contemporary imagery of that subject via computer-based image technology.
This project was instigated by a number of things: first, by my abiding interest in depicting the human form in paint, as I find its versatility in a design, its invitation to empathy, and its difficulty, to be something worth attempting to depict with success. In addition, my curiosity regarding the new ways to depict the form using electronic technology seem to challenge to the traditional methods I rely upon, and I wanted to comment on the similarities and differences between the studios of the painters and the technicians.
In this way, I aim to continue my investigation into what I see as the contrasting quality of human nature, and symbolically represent opposites such as mind and body, analog and digital, realism and idealism, terrestrial and the transcendent.
