About the Item
French contemporary artist Natalya Mougenot invites us into a world of expressive simplicity and emotional depth with her painting "Dreams in the Shade". This intimate composition portrays a nude woman lying peacefully on a bed of green, nestled in nature—perhaps in a secluded garden or under the protective canopy of a tree in the forest. Bathed in soft dappled light, she rests not just her body, but her mind, in a rare moment of stillness. It is a scene of quiet reverie, where the everyday noise fades, and inner worlds begin to unfold. Here, dreaming becomes an act of renewal—a return to oneself, to nature, to being.
Painted in an abstract Impressionist style imbued with the gentle directness of art naïf, the piece radiates warmth, sincerity, and emotional clarity. Mougenot’s brushwork is loose, intuitive, and emotive, evoking sensations rather than detailing forms. This aesthetic aligns with her commitment to authenticity over polish—an artistic approach that prioritizes feeling over formality.
"Dreams in the Shade" is part of Mougenot’s evolving series that celebrates the essence, strength, and subtle beauty of women. Her subjects are not stylized ideals but real, emotional beings—resting, reflecting, reclaiming space. In portraying women in vulnerable, unguarded moments, she challenges the notion that power must be loud. There is strength in softness, and resilience in repose. Her art is a quiet rebellion against the performative, a celebration of what is genuine and unspoken.
Mougenot’s style is unmistakably her own—a fusion of expressive figuration with influences from art brut and art naïve, two movements she holds close. These raw, often outsider traditions speak to her deeply held values: honesty, authenticity, and emotional truth. Unlike academic or hyperrealistic styles, art brut and naïve art embrace imperfection as part of their soul. For Mougenot, this aesthetic language allows her to paint directly from the heart, free from artistic constraint. It’s a choice rooted in integrity—one that ensures every brushstroke reflects a real emotional state rather than a constructed image.
“My work is not about perfection—it’s about presence,” Mougenot explains. Her painting process is intuitive, guided by emotional rhythm rather than preconceived composition. Each piece becomes a visual diary, a moment translated into texture, color, and form. The result is a body of work that feels alive—fragile yet grounded, bold yet deeply human.
"Dreams in the Shade" is rendered in oil on stretched cotton canvas and comes ready to hang. Though sold unframed, the artwork can be effortlessly styled to suit any space—whether framed in a minimalist wood, or gently leaning against a wall on a shelf or console, it brings with it a touch of peaceful introspection and organic beauty.
The artwork ships directly from France with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its originality and provenance. Lifestyle images are provided for inspiration and ambiance but may not reflect exact scale or color accuracy, which can vary slightly due to screen settings.
Natalya Mougenot, born in Kazakhstan and now based in Lyon, brings a richly layered cultural perspective to her work. Her paintings—bold in emotion yet tender in tone—have found homes in private collections across the world. Each canvas is a quiet invitation to pause, reflect, and feel.

Natalya Mougenot id a french artist living in France for more than 20 years. She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes. She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country. She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now. In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult. As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult. Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference. She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details. Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach. Natalya manipulates different mediums without a preconceived plan since she is guided by what she wants to express at the moment by embracing the quality of my materials. She does not deny that her artworks reflect her intuitive approach and her love for vibrant colors which represent her who she is. Natalya says she is never able to create the same piece more than once. Sometimes she paints from photos or images. Sometimes she paints from memory. She tells to herself : "Just be yourself when you create ".
