"Parisian Model" is an oil on canvas painting by Max Weber painted in 1908. The work is signed and dated, lower right, "Max Weber Paris 1908". The painting size is 35 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches. The framed size is 43 x 27 x 2 1/4 inches. "Parisian Model" was painted in 1908, when Weber participated in a life class in Matisse's studio in Paris and painted several nudes. Weber was influenced toward a more Cubist styler after seeing Cezanne's work in the 1906-07 Salon in Paris, and he consorted within avant-garde circles in Paris as early as 1905. After returning to the US in 1909, Weber was credited with showing American audiences Cubism based on his firsthand knowledge of the key players and the style. Several drawings of Weber's from this time are in museum collections at The Met, the Smithsonian, and MoMA and show a similar style and stocatto gesture. Title: Garden of Earthly Delights Artist: TheDirtyFabulous Media: Oil on metal with polyurethane varnish Size: 60 x 40 inches / 153 x 102cm Year created: 2012-2014 Societies have long employed images that visualize their belief systems or attempt to encapsulate a narrative of our human destiny. This work follows in that tradition. The uppermost vignette is a silhouette from the nursery rhyme “Jack be nimble”, a children’s rhyme that refers to a 19th century game and a form of fortune telling. In Roman mythology Parcae (plural) were the personifications of fate. They are used in this painting as bookend figures on either side of a cosmic machine that answers questions of fate. Three vintage light bulbs labeled “yes”, “maybe” and “no” sit atop the clock – like machine and illuminate answers to humanity’s eternal questions. At the top of the composition are several re- configured tarot / divination cards belonging to an anonymous person circa 1930’s. The cards here are labeled; satisfaction dark woman, jealousy, dark man and betrayal. The grouping of these four cards refers to both positive and negative potentials concerning fate and offer clues to the viewer on a number of possible scenarios it could describe. The lower portion of the picture contains two silhouetted vignettes on either side of a central image of stars and planets against a dark void. The left image is of two children in a small wagon being pulled by a beetle. This is a reference to Egyptian mythology and the sun god Khepri. who personifies birth / rebirth. Tadashi Asoma was a Japanese-American painter. Born in Japan in 1923, his career began when, in 1958, the Japanese government awarded him a scholarship to study painting in Paris. After Paris, Asoma visited the United States and became fascinated with the current American style of painting. He eventually moved to New York, near the East Village, where he studied and worked for three years. Asoma did return to Japan for a period of time, however, he moved to New York permanently in 1961 and stayed in the region until his passing in 2017. This early work by Asoma displays the American influence that so enamored him when he first visited the United States. Rendered in flat and discrete sections of bold color, the impressive composition bears an interesting relation to the work of Pop artist Tom Wesselmann. Much like Wesselmann’s work, Asoma builds his image with applications of bold and flat color, often isolating and highlighting sections of the composition, bringing the viewer’s eye to these discrete sections.
