Siena Italy - 19thC British Impressionist oil painting cityscape female artist
Located in London, GB
This beautiful painting of Siena Italy is an oil on canvas, framed behind glass in its original gallery frame, by Susan Isabel Dacre. It was painted circa 1875. She was an early member of the Feminist movement and a member of the Manchester arts community. She travelled with Lord Leighton and exhibited widely. Indeed this painting retains an exhibition label for Manchester Art Gallery. This work shows influences of early British impressionism. The clarity and palette are light and airy. The painting depicts Siena in Tuscany, Italy, with houses dotted all around the hill with Saint Catherine's church on top. A superb Victorian painting by a noted female artist. Signed lower right. Provenance. Manchester Gallery label and number verso. Harnell and Son London Art Dealers. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 12 inches by 8 inches, canvas in original excellent condition. Housed in its original Harnell and Son London Gallery frame, behind glass, 17 by 13 inches, in good condition. Susan Isabel Dacre (1844 – 1933) was an English artist of the Victorian era. She was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, and was educated in Salford. For the decade of 1858–68 she lived in Paris. After a winter in Italy (1869), she returned to Paris, and was present during the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. She returned to England in 1871 and began studying art at the Manchester School of Art, where she won the Queen's Prize in 1875. She began a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Annie Swynnerton; the two women pursued their art studies in Rome and Paris between 1874 and 1880. Around 1872, Lord Leighton dictated notes and observations on his methods of painting and composing his pictures to Susan Dacre, during a stay on the island of Capri. From 1877-1880 she was in Paris at the Académie Julian with a fellow - pupil Marie Bashkirtseff...

'Spaniel and Sleeping Cat' , Unknown, Oil on Canvas Painting, 19th c.
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This classic English school 12 x 16 in. Oil on Canvas framed painting features a pet Spaniel and cat resting on a desk in a home study environment. The dog is seated, its body facing the right side of the painting while its head is facing the viewer at the picture plane. The Spaniel has a long haired black and white patterned coat. Its long ears are black and curly and face is mostly black with an area of white fur on its head and a strip of the white down the nose and into the chin. The stomach and legs/paws are mainly white, while his back and tail are both black, although its full body is not visible. The domestic cat is depicted sleeping to the right of the dog, both positioned on a green desk. The cat is sleeping horizontally with the composition, its head on the left and its curled up body and tail on the right. The cat has mainly grey fur with patches of white on its nose, neck and the one leg and one paw that is visible to the viewer. The edge of the green desk, closest to the picture plane, meets with the bottom edge of the work and the left edge of the green table is only partially visible as the further half is cut off by the left side of the canvas. The desk is an olive green color and takes up the foreground of the piece. On the desk next to the cat is just a small corner of a singular document that reads "Young America" and then below that a couple of flourishes/ ornamental lines and the date, "1872." Behind the document, on the desk, are five standing books and two stacked books. The books appear to be up against the back wall that is depicted in the work, next to a hung landscape painting. The largest standing book's title is "Natural History," a greenish/blue hardback book with a maroon red strip where the title and author's name is on the book's spine. A smaller book standing on the right of "Natural History" is a copy of "Robinson Crusoe," a darker green hardback with a strip of silver for title and author upon the spine. To the left of "Natural History" is an untitled book and to the left is a copy of "Arabian Nights," a tan hardback with red/orange at the title and author's name. To the left of "Arabian Nights" is another untitled book. The two books laid on the desk, on the right side of the standing books, are both tan/light brown books...

19th Century seascape oil painting of fishing boats off a harbour early morning
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
George Stainton British, (1838-1900) Fishing Vessels off a Harbour Early Morning Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 23.25 inches x 35.25 inches Size including frame: 31 inches x 43 inches A wonderful coastal marine painting of boats off a busy harbour at dawn by George Stainton. A large ship is depicted having weighed anchor and with sails unfurled as a supply boat arrives port side. In the foreground, a group of fishermen can be seen in a rowing boat waiting for their next catch. In the distance, lies a busy harbour, possibly Chatham Dockyard. George Stainton was a marine and landscape artist who was born in Aston, Birmingham in October 1838 to John Stainton and Ann Horton. By the age of 12, he was working as a paper mache painter and then later as a Japanner before becoming a full-time artist. He specialised in painting seascapes and river scenes in the style of Abraham Hulk and was influenced by the Dutch school. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists from 1865 and also at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He married Clara Adelaide Mason (née shears), a widow on 8 November, 1866 and together they lived in Addesley Street, Aston. The couple had 8 children and one of their sons Ernest Stainton became a lithographic artist. During the mid to late 1870’s he lived at Walnut Terrace in Kyrwicks Lane in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham. However, by 1881, Stainton had moved to nearby Moseley Road where many Birmingham artists of the industrial period lived and also took up photography. Sometime during the late 1880’s early 1890’s, he made his final move to Pembroke Villa, 14 St Pauls Road, Moseley Road. He died at his home on 25 April, 1900. Whilst Stainton lived in Birmingham all his life, he travelled around the country painting coastal views of the Bristol Channel, Portsmouth and the Medway, as well as river scenes of the Thames, Tyne and Mersey. He also visited Scotland and Northern France. His works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of the weather and movement of the water. His paintings have always been popular when they appear on the art market. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
