Zigi Ben-Haim (born 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American-Israeli painter, collage artist and sculptor who lives and works in New York City and Israel. Ben-Haim unveiled his sculpture, Treasure the Green, in SoHo on Broadway. The project was sponsored by the SoHo Broadway Initiative and the New York Department of Transportation's Art Program. The sculpture is considered to be the first sculpture to receive permission to be installed on a bus bulb on Broadway. The sculpture was made to "emphasize the importance of nature in our lives," and stands as a reminder of "the importance of reconnecting with the pure nature of the green." The sculpture uses the symbol of the leaf, which has been a major icon of Ben-Haim's work for the past 30 years. It symbolizes nature and it is a metaphoric way of emphasizing nature and the surrounding environment. He is of the first generation of Israeli artists to develop large international followings like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman and Avigdor Arikha. Ben-Haim has received numerous grants and awards, including from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, National Endowments for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emily Harvey Foundation Venice, Muestra Int. de Obra Grafica (Spain), and the Ministry of Culture in Israel. John Farrar (American, 1928-1972) Signed: John Farrar (Lower, Left) “ Pardner ”, 1943 Titled Above Signature (Lower, Left) Oil on Canvas 26 ⅛” x 32 ⅛” Housed in a 2 ½” period ornamented Newcomb-Macklin frame in toned gold leaf, in good original condition. Outside Size: 30 1/2" x 36 5/8" A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old. As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions. In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943). That same year he won the top prize at Atlanta University’s third annual “ Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists ” with a piece titled “ Queenie ”. Approximately one hundred and fifty works of art were included in the show, representing the best works of more than seventy-five contemporary African American artists. This show included works by Romare Bearden, who was awarded Honorable Mention for his painting “ The Two Genrerations ”. Also included among the exhibitors - Charles H. Wai Ming is a Chinese Asian Modern & Contemporary painter who was born in 1938. In this colorful abstract painting, women are huddled in a circle gambling and betting. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work. His primary interest was to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong, and so was able to find some initial success. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Carl Walter Liner was born in the Swiss canton of Appenzell, near the border with Liechtenstein, in 1914. The son of famed artist Carl August Liner, the younger Liner enjoyed more critical and commercial renown for his landscapes. In 1938 at the age of 24, he undertook what would become the first of several residencies in Paris. This particular sojourn helped to establish the trajectory of his career, as Paris would provide the setting in which he became acquainted with early twentieth century masters Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Braque, Ossip Zadkine, Gérard Schneider, and Erich Heckel. The stylistic and technical influence of his contemporaries is clearly evident in Liner’s work from this point forward. Unfortunately, the dawn of the 1940s would bring about a number of challenges for Liner. With the outbreak of war, Liner was mobilized for the Swiss Border Guard, and returned home to Switzerland in 1939. He remained on active duty until 1945, only to lose his father the following year. The death of the elder Liner left a profound impact on his son, who eventually made his way back to Paris in 1947 and embarked upon what would become a very successful series of nudes. By his own admission, 1948 was a pivotal year in Liner’s career, as a particularly spiritual trip to Algeria would foment the emotions led to the beginning of his practice with abstraction. Henceforth, Liner would vacillate between the figurative and abstract, creating parallel oeuvres. His abstraction from the 1950s and 60s mirrored...
