About the Item
In elegant clothing and a pompous hat, the lady looks out from the side of the picture. The narrow neckline and the sideways positioning create a strict and controlled impression. The hat seems to rest heavily on her head and the young lady's gaze does not appear to be a joyful one. The piercing and intense gaze is captivating. The background remains slender and is kept in green tones. Who the lady is remains unknown.
The painter grew up in Slovenia before devoting himself to studying art in Dresden. There he came into contact with Expressionist artists such as Emil Nolde and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and oriented himself towards the artists' association Die Brücke. Thanks to the wealth of his wife Baroness Louise Anna von Korff, Gerliczy was able to concentrate exclusively on his art.
After his death, his work was largely forgotten until the collection was rediscovered in the 1980s.
