Eric Johansson: A Journey Through Turbulent Times
Born in Dresden, Germany, in 1896, Eric Johansson was a talented artist whose life was deeply affected by the political upheavals of his time. Though relatively unknown in Sweden, Johansson achieved recognition as a notable expressionist abroad. His work, marked by vibrant expressions and emotional depth, was heavily influenced by the modernist movements of early 20th-century Europe, particularly the German expressionist collective "Die Brücke."
Growing up with German foster parents in a culturally rich Dresden, Johansson was immersed in an environment that nurtured his artistic ambitions. However, the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933 posed significant threats to his career and safety. Johansson, an outspoken critic of the regime and a member of the Communist Party, was also married to a Jewish woman. These factors made him a target for persecution. His art was deemed "degenerate" by the Nazis, and his works were displayed alongside other modernist masterpieces in the notorious Degenerate art (Entartete Kunst) exhibition, which aimed to discredit and condemn modernist art.
Despite his Swedish citizenship providing some initial protection, Johansson faced increasing danger. A casual remark about Hermann Göring led to his imprisonment for four months. Following his release, Johansson managed to escape from Germany, journeying through Czechoslovakia and Poland before finally finding refuge in Sweden, where he spent the rest of his life.
Johansson's body of work, much of which was tragically lost or destroyed during the Nazi purges, serves as a poignant testament to his resilience and artistic spirit. His paintings, once denigrated by the Nazis, now stand as enduring symbols of defiance and the power of creative expression in the face of oppression.

Literary Origins of Angelica
The subject of this painting is Angelica, a princess from the epic chivalric romances of the Italian Renaissance. She first appears in Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato (1483) and reappears famously in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1532). In these poems – part of the Matter of France cycle of Charlemagne and his paladins – Angelica’s extraordinary beauty ensnares many knights, including Orlando (Roland) and his cousin Rinaldo, sparking rivalries and adventures. Ariosto’s narrative particularly highlights Angelica’s tumultuous journey: at one point she is stripped and chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster (a scene mirroring the myth of Andromeda) before being dramatically rescued by the valiant knight Ruggiero on his winged horse. Ultimately, however, Angelica chooses her own destiny. She falls in love with a humble Saracen soldier, Medoro, whom she nurses back to health, and she returns with him to her far-off Asian kingdom – an affair that drives the heartbroken Orlando to madness. This independent resolution (marrying outside the circle of Christian knights) made Angelica an emblem of feminine agency and romantic idealism in Renaissance literature. Her story remained popular in art and literature through the centuries, symbolizing the allure and elusiveness of love.

The work shows a strong resemblance to a portrait by Finsonius in the North Brabant Museum. This
signed and dated "Girl with Basket and Cherries" (Inv. 15529), was painted just a year later, in 1632.
Not only are the paintings remarkably similar in overall size and format, in painting style, and in the
positioning of the girls in full length in their white lace dresses. They are also connected by the
iconographic scheme of the respective coral necklaces, each with a gold memorial medal hanging
from it. Although they are of course individuals, the faces are very similar in their depictions of
features such as eyes, nose, and lips. This points to the same technique applied by the same painter.
Finally, the handwriting is almost the same on the works by Finsonius known so far.
