About the Item

This lovely Belgian Impressionist figurative oil painting is by noted artist Henri Moreau. Although Belgian by birth, Moreau spent many years in France, moving to Paris in 1920 and one can see the influence of the French Impressionists in his work. In this painting, painted circa 1920, two young ballerinas are putting on their ballet shoes, one seated, one standing. Their tutus are a mass of froth around them. There is a table with two lovely gleaming red bowls and a vivid green bottle. In the mirror above we can see one ballerina reflected. There are such rich and vivid tones and the brushwork is just superb. Ballerina paintings are always popular but this is a particularly fine one and an excellent example of Moreau's work. Signed lower left. Provenance. Surrey estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 40 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate Bourlet silvered frame, 47 inches by 39 inches, in good condition. Henri Moreau (1869-1943) was Belgian by birth and by artistic practice. He exhibited in his homeland frequently, including the Brussels International Exhibition of 1910. Moreau moved to Paris in the 1920s, and therefore it is likely he derived inspiration from the fashionable, fantastical world that surrounded him. As well as portraits and figurative works, Moreau also executed a number of still life paintings and landscapes. Still life had grown increasingly popular throughout the second half of the 19th-Century, and by the time he was painting in the early 20th-Century was a respected subject in its own right. His landscapes suggest an interest in, and perhaps travel to, America. Moreau also acted as a painting tutor to his son, Max-Léon Moreau (1902-1992). Moreau the younger became a prominent society portrait painter during his lifetime, and his home in Spain is now a museum filled with his works. There are certain similarities in style and execution to his father’s work, demonstrative of the lessons of the elder. Indeed, Max-Léon Moreau apparently expressed a ‘deep admiration’ for his father and his teachings, often watching him work as a young boy. The younger Moreau also accompanied the older on trips to Belgian theatres, perhaps to garner inspiration from the trendy, fashionable theatregoers and the lavish displays of the sets.

Provenance: private collection Maria Tort Xirau ( Figueres , 26 May 1924 – 6 June 2018) was a painter and photographic and cinematographic editor from Emporda. She developed a long professional career in leading photographic studios, in films for The Walt Disney Company and also in advertising claims for companies such as Educa Borràs . The second half of her life was dedicated to painting, exercising a luminous, varied and nostalgic chromatic style in the techniques of oil and watercolor and with exhibitions of her work in Barcelona and Figueres. The Biographical Dictionary of Art Empordà defined Tort Xirau's work as "a painting that is characterized by the strength of the strokes, the vividness and brightness of the chromatic range and exudes mastery of the photographic technique. A mixture of nostalgia and tenderness is evident.". Tort Xirau's paintings were exhibited in the two towns where she spent her life: in 1992 she exhibited his work at the Caixa de Figueres Exhibition Hall. Two years later, she did it at Sala Conex in Barcelona and in 2007 and 2013 the Consortium of Sant Ferran Castle and the Figueres Town Council organized tribute exhibitions. In 2013, she ceded to the council of the city of Figueres her work Mercat de la plaça de l'Ajuntament , watercolored on paper around 1991, which is exhibited in the rest room of the building. On June 6, 2018, she died in Figueres at the age of 94, receiving the apostolic blessing . Two years after her death, part of her paintings were included in the exhibition Paint, create, live. Exquisite, original oil on canvas painting of a ballet performance by the well known French artist, Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. Old wax reline. Solid mahogany wood frame with gold decoration. Overall framed measurements are 24.75 by 33.25 inches. Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson was born in 1878 in Bordeaux. His first exhibition was in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he would later become a member. He received an honourable mention at the age of 23 in 1901, and a third-place medal in 1911. He also exhibited at the Société des Beaux Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. Cosson is a post-impressionist artist who developed a very distinctive style which makes him immediately recognisable among his peers. His passion was to capture a bustling Paris which was the epicentre of the Modern art world at the beginning of the twentieth century. Fascinated by Edgar Degas, he almost invariably followed the themes beloved by the Impressionist Master, such as Parisian women or horse racing. But like for Degas, his most admired works remain his paintings of...
