Portrait of a Young Man with Bagpipes, Follower of J.H. Tischbein the Elder

1700s

About the Item

Follower of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (1722–1789) Man with Bagpipes oil on oak panel 25 × 19 cm (9.8 × 7.5 in) 31 x 26 cm (12.2 x 10.2 in) This refined 18th-century portrait depicts a young man dressed in a striking red coat, his gaze turned gently to the side, holding a set of bagpipes with both poise and ease. The instrument, rarely featured in German portraiture of the period, introduces a rustic, musical element that contrasts beautifully with the sitter’s composed elegance and richly detailed attire. The painting reflects the influence of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder, a leading figure of German Rococo portraiture, known for his sophisticated compositions and soft modelling. While the artist remains unidentified, the work clearly aligns with Tischbein’s stylistic sphere, though it lacks the polished idealisation typical of his hand. Instead, it offers a more direct and expressive treatment—particularly in its vivid coloration, strong facial modelling, and textural contrasts—which lends the portrait an engaging and characterful presence. Nonetheless, the painting displays a sensitive rendering of fabric, gesture, and mood, all hallmarks of mid-18th-century German portraiture. It captures a moment of quiet theatricality, blending genre elements with a courtly sensibility. While the artist remains unknown, the work stands as a compelling example of Tischbein’s stylistic legacy as it extended beyond his own hand. condition: The painting is in excellent condition. The oak panel is flat and stable, with no visible warping or cracks. The paint surface is well preserved, with vibrant, clear colors and no signs of flaking or restoration. The frame is cast in brass and mounted on a solid wooden backing.

Julius Kronberg’s Angelica – A Romantic Heroine of Renaissance Legend
Located in Stockholm, SE
Literary Origins of Angelica The subject of this painting is Angelica, a princess from the epic chivalric romances of the Italian Renaissance. She first appears in Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato (1483) and reappears famously in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1532). In these poems – part of the Matter of France cycle of Charlemagne and his paladins – Angelica’s extraordinary beauty ensnares many knights, including Orlando (Roland) and his cousin Rinaldo, sparking rivalries and adventures. Ariosto’s narrative particularly highlights Angelica’s tumultuous journey: at one point she is stripped and chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster (a scene mirroring the myth of Andromeda) before being dramatically rescued by the valiant knight Ruggiero on his winged horse. Ultimately, however, Angelica chooses her own destiny. She falls in love with a humble Saracen soldier, Medoro, whom she nurses back to health, and she returns with him to her far-off Asian kingdom – an affair that drives the heartbroken Orlando to madness. This independent resolution (marrying outside the circle of Christian knights) made Angelica an emblem of feminine agency and romantic idealism in Renaissance literature. Her story remained popular in art and literature through the centuries, symbolizing the allure and elusiveness of love. Kronberg’s Portrayal and Composition In Julius Kronberg...

Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. An artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art Gallery in Milan, while maintaining connections with important galleries, such as Marlborough Fine Art in London and Galerie Koch in Hanover. The artwork represents an ideal abandoned church...
