Portrait of a Gentleman in Doublet & Ruff c.1595; Elizabethan oil on copper
Located in London, GB
Portrait of an Elizabethan Gentleman in a Black Doublet c.1595 Manner of Hieronimo Custodis (died c.1593) Oil on copper Unsigned This exquisite oil on copper portrait, painted around 430 years ago, is a splendid survival from the Elizabethan era - the golden age in England’s history, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne. It is a time that is sandwiched between two golden ages of English renaissance culture, the reigns of Henry VIII and Charles I. This period produced a style of painting quite unlike that anywhere else in Europe and one that deserves serious assessment. Just a couple of years after our portrait was painted, English painting developed on another course, driven mainly by the artists Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger and Isaac Oliver; they depicted a new mood that was pervading Elizabethan and Jacobean society, which was that of romantic melancholy. Elizabethan painting...

17th century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen
Located in Aartselaar, BE
17th century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen at the age of 26 in 1628, Gottfried von Wedig also known as Gotthardt Wedig (attr.) This highly decorative portrait depicts the 26 year old Caspar Roemerskirchen, wearing an intricate jacket made of a luxurious black fabric, which is stiffened and shaped to perfectly fit his silhouette. It is adorned with an opulent collar, which at the time was a true status symbol, worn to emphasise the refined class and social status of the sitter. In his hands he is holding luxurious soft leather gloves. The vivid green drapery and table cloth add further vivacity to the portrait. His ice blue eyes appear to be shimmering with a life-like quality. After extensive archival research, we were able to discover that our sitter was a wine merchant; what joyous stories he must have to tell! Gottfried de Wedig...

Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746) Oil on canvas 72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm. The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school. This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill. Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns. In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration. The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions. The account books...

Saint Roch with Saint Jerome + Saint Sebastian - British Edwardian oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb religious figurative oil painting is by noted artist Wilfred de Glehn. Although some experts rank de Glehn alongside Sargent, he is considered as something of a late British Renoir, for his deft use of sunlight and shadow. Indeed he was good friends with John Singer Sargent and collaborated with his on some projects. This painting, painted circa 1910 is of three saints, from left to right they are Saint Jerome, Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian. It is based on a work attributed to 16th century artist Alessandro Oliverio. Saint Jerome was a biblical translator and monastic leader and is depicted in red, holding books. Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian were known as the Plague saints - Plague saints offered hope and healing before, during, and after times of plague. A specific style of painting, the plague votive, was considered a talisman for warding off the plague. It portrayed a particular saint as an intercessor between God and the person or persons who commissioned the painting – usually a town, government, lay confraternity, or religious order to atone for the "collective guilt" of the community. Rather than a society depressed and resigned to repeated epidemics, these votives represent people taking positive steps to regain control over their environment. Paintings of Roch represent the confidence in which renaissance worshipers sought to access supernatural aid in overcoming the ravages of the plague. The thirteenth-century Saint Roch (or Rocco), whose death is still commemorated in Italy, is especially invoked against the plague. He attended plague victims in public hospitals in Italy according to traditional accounts of his life. Images attributed to the Spanish historical painter Nicolás Borrás in the Royal Cornwall Museum, or other works in institutions from The National Gallery to the Wallace Collection, show him baring his thigh to show the mark of the plague, as he is in this painting. Saint Roch is also the patron saint of dogs, after one carried food to him in the prison where he died...

Presumed Portrait of Amalia von Solms, Circle of Michiel Jansz VAN MIEREVELD
Located in Firenze, IT
Presumed Portrait of Amalia von Solms, Circle of Michiel Jansz VAN MIEREVELD (1567-1641) Technique: Oil on copper Dimensions: H 11.3 cm x W 14.8 cm (with frame) School: Dutch painting, Circle of Michiel Jansz van Miereveld (1567-1641) Dating: Circa 1625-1630 This refined portrait of a noblewoman, wearing a richly decorated gown with a detailed lace collar and adorned with a geometric brooch, exemplifies the elegance and sophistication of early 17th-century Dutch portraiture. The subject is possibly Amalia von Solms (1602-1675), Princess of Orange and an influential figure at the Dutch court. Originally arriving in the Netherlands as a lady-in-waiting, she caught the attention of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, whom she married in 1625. Following her marriage, she gained prominence and became an essential figure in the political and social circles of the time. Amalia played a crucial role in shaping the House of Orange-Nassau, using her position to arrange advantageous marriages for her children and securing powerful alliances with European dynasties. Known for her intelligence and political acumen, she influenced many of the diplomatic decisions of her era and is considered one of the key figures in the consolidation of the Dutch Republic's power. The precision in the rendering of lace, jewelry, and facial features suggests the involvement of the Circle of Michiel Jansz van Miereveld, a distinguished portraitist known for capturing the nobility's dignity and authority. Miereveld's studio produced numerous portraits for the Dutch aristocracy, and his works are characterized by a delicate balance of realism and regal presentation. Michiel Jansz van Miereveld: Portraitist and Studio Production Michiel Jansz van Miereveld was an extraordinarily prolific artist, with his studio producing three to four portraits per week. This high output was possible thanks to the help of his sons, students, and assistants, who worked under his supervision. Van Miereveld hailed from a family of artisans from the town of Mier, near Turnhout in Brabant. His great-grandfather relocated to Delft around 1500 with his two sons. Michiel grew up in an artistic environment, as his father was a goldsmith. After training under several masters, Van Miereveld completed his education and, in 1589, married Stijntge Pietersdr. Van der Pes, with whom he had eight children over the following fourteen years. Most of Van Miereveld's portraits were created during the early 17th century, at the peak of his career. His studio was located in a grand residence in Delft known as "Het Wapen van Spangien," a property with a canal-side house and outbuildings on the Oude Delft. Van Miereveld typically painted on wooden panels, which were supplied by carpenters rather than made in his studio. Portraits could be ordered in various standard sizes, according to the client's preferences and budget. His portraits were known for their formal rigor: body postures and the angle of the head followed consistent patterns. While the clothing worn by his subjects was often understated, it was always rendered with great attention to detail, especially when depicting luxurious fabrics. Approximately 50% of his surviving works are replicas or copies, with some portraits, such as those of Prince Maurits, existing in up to 42 versions. The prices for Van Miereveld's portraits also varied depending on the composition. A bust-length portrait cost between 48 and 50 florins, while full-length portraits could reach prices of 200 to 300 florins. His studio gradually transformed into a family business, with his eldest son playing a key role, and later, three more of his children contributing to the production of portraits. Many of Van Miereveld's clients came from Delft, but his reputation extended beyond the city. Commissions arrived from other parts of the Dutch Republic, including Amsterdam and The Hague, as well as from abroad. His clientele was primarily composed of wealthy middle-class individuals, but he also painted portraits for military officers, diplomats, theologians, and aristocrats. Van Miereveld's use of materials and his painting techniques were highly refined. He employed finely made wooden panels and quality brushes to achieve a meticulous finish. One of the most iconic subjects of his portraits was Prince Maurits of Nassau, whose likeness Van Miereveld painted numerous times in various formats, ranging from small busts to full-length portraits. These portraits of Prince Maurits became a hallmark of Van Miereveld's studio. Famous Portraits: Maurits van Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625); Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584-1647); Amalia von Solms, Princess of Orange (1602-1675); Elizabeth Stuart...
