About the Item

1920s portrait in oil of a lady of quality by Paul Hercule Hogg. The painting is signed bottom right and is resigned and annotated to the back of the panel. The painting has been varnished just to the main centre section which gives an interesting contrast to the edges which are more matt. A charming depiction of a lady, probably a friend of the artist. Sadly the name of the subject is unknown but we do know it was painted at La Grange Rumade in the Var (South of France) in 1926. The artists titled it 'No 3 Tête'. Hogg has captured the character of the sitter, coiffured hair, fine clothes. She has a firm and steely gaze as she looks out just past us from the portrait. Hogg has used a muted colour palette very much of its time, mauves, greens and then the flesh tones and hair. Born in Herisau but originally from Fribourg, Paul Hogg grew up on the banks of the Sarine before enrolling at the Cantonal Technicum. He quickly felt cramped there and, in 1910, left for Paris in the company of the painter Anton Schmid. He studied first at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, then with Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts, in the same class as the Russian Chaïm Soutine. Hogg was made a member of the Salon d'Automne in 1924; at the same time, he exhibited regularly at both the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants. He also made numerous stays in Tunis, as well as in Algeria and Libya. In 1926, he married Berthe Affagard, a dramatic artist whose stage name was Simone Fargette. In 1937, he received the rank of Knight of the Order of the Alaouite Ouissam, equivalent to the Legion of Honor, for his work in Morocco. At the dawn of the Second World War, he left Paris and moved to Provence, to Sanary-sur-Mer. There he rubbed shoulders with Eugène Baboulène, Yves Brayer, Léonard Foujita. He also frequented Ossip Zadkine. However, he regularly returned to exhibit in Fribourg, notably with the local section of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects, at the Salon permanent du Capitole, as well as at the Museum of Art and History. Even before he had known North Africa and the ochre of its dunes, Hogg was already giving his colours Mediterranean accents. A painter of the sun, he uses few cold colours and gives his canvases a velvety texture that seems to result from the vibrations of light. Despite his love for the landscapes of the South, he remained attached to the canton of Fribourg, where he returned every summer, and was particularly fond of Gruyère, whose green landscapes he tirelessly painted. If his works are so intimate, it is because he prefers easel painting to large studio formats. Outside the major pictorial movements, Paul Hogg briefly tried his hand at Cubism in the wake of André Lhote, but quickly gave it up to return to a more traditional painting. He was closer to the painters of Poetic Reality, Roland Oudot, Maurice Brianchon and Jules Cavaillès. In addition to the Mediterranean and Gruyère landscapes, which he is particularly fond of, Hogg also enjoys staging still lives and the representation of figures, self-portraits, bathers and Berber women.

By Carlo Socrate
Located in Roma, IT
Portrait of Lady is an original oil on canvas artwork realized by Carlo Socrate (1889-1967) in 1930. A beautiful portrait of a woman by one of the major exponents of the association of painters that came to be known as Scuola Romana (Roman School). Very good conditions. Collect a masterpiece of the XX century. Carlo Socrate (Mezzana Bigli -Pavia 1889 – Rome 1967) He is the son of actors and lives in Argentina until the age of nine years. Once returned to Italy, he begins attending the Free School of the Nude and in 1914, he goes to Rome, where a year later he would study at Villa Strohl-Fern. In 1917, he worked for the company, Ballets Russes by Diaghilev; he also collaborated with the scenography for Las Meninas and prepared the scenes for Les femmes de bonne humeur (The Good Humored Ladies) by Léon Bakst. During this period, he meets Picasso, whom he follows to Paris, collaborating with him on scenes from Parade. During his stay in Paris, he meets Derain and other exponents of the cultural environment. With Picasso, he visited Barcelona and then Madrid where, together, they visited The Prado Museum. In 1918, at the Casina Valadier on the Pincian Hill (Rome), he exhibits his Still Life with a Dish of Apples and Onions, which arouses perplexity in the Roman environment for his personal rare “neoclassicism” but at the same time, attentive to European situation in those years. After Portatrice di Frutta (Fruit Carrier) (1924), which is one of his masterpieces, he exhibits i Cacciatori (The Hunters), a very challenging painting, at the “Novecento Italiano...
