In the opulence and extravagance of this exhibition, the tight framing propels forward the earthly beauties against a luxurious background of precious dyes created by the hand of man. The tray laden with fruit is placed on an entablature covered with a sumptuous Persian carpet in shimmering colors. Offering figs, bunches of grapes, apples and burst pomegranate, it transports us to the south of France. A Macaw with red feathers seem to watch over the contents and courageously confront two small toy spaniels installed on a luxurious red velvet cushion generously embroidered with gold threads and decorated with pompoms. Captivated by this tense atmosphere, we barely see another intruder: a squirrel quietly nibbling a bunch of grapes. On the left in the foreground our eye is immediately drawn to two melons, one of which is half-open and ripe. The realistic rendering of his skin with its bumpy texture awakens our sense of touch, it seems that this rough surface created thanks to generous serifs can break the canvas, like a fruit ready to burst. Scattered warm lighting creating chiaroscuro betrays the Italian influence. This is how fruits and animals emerge from the darkness with aesthetic force and a three-dimensional appearance. Our work is a variant of the lost composition of Reynaud Levieux known through replicas and its publication in the catalog of Jean Wytenhove Reynaud Levieux and classical painting in Provence (Aix-en-Provence, 1990, p. 58, repr.), our painting wonderfully illustrates the fame of this composition in its time. This aspect of his production is less known today, and is an essential milestone for better understanding the talent he displays in this genre. As evidenced by his paintings, the painter was greatly influenced by the Italian master of the Roman Baroque still life Franceso Noletti or Fieravino active in Rome between 1636 and 1654, the period of Reynaud Levieux's first stay in Rome. This period corresponds to a turning point in the art of Italian still life. The first Italian still lifes, around 1600, are meticulous and precise, often with symbolic meanings, linked to religion, the vanity of earthly foods, and the transience of life. A few decades later, Italian still life adopted the baroque style, which suited it wonderfully: it always sought illusion, the faithful rendering of materials, but in abundance, heaps and luxury. Having become a decorative object, it gains in virtuosity and ease what it loses in spirituality. Reynaud LEVIEUX (Nîmes, 1613 – Rome, 1690) Son of a glass painter, Protestant from Uzès, settled around 1612 in Nîmes, Reynaud Levieux was born on January 6, 1613. After initial training in his father's workshop, of whom he will always keep the taste for smooth, contrasting painting and impeccable technique, he left for Rome in 1635. He was part of a team of six painters with Pierre Mignard, Jean le Maire, Charles Errard, Jean Nocret and Nicolas Chaperon. Under the direction of Nicolas Poussin, he copied Raphaël - two painters who would have a profound impact on him. His paintings from this period are not all known and we are beginning to discover them, sometimes hidden under illustrious names, such as Theseus discovering his father's arms which was attributed to Laurent de La Hyre...

Acrylic on masonite. This is a pivotal work in deep and radiant cobalt blue from 1950. It dipicts calligraphic and hieroglyph structures over a grid and pyramidal base by the first generation abstract expressionist. Pousette-Dart was among the most inventive of the Abstract Expressionist generation, His uncanny talent was to expand the nature of abstraction and still make each mark each element very much his own; a reflection of what he called   "the concealed power of the spirit," he said, “not of the brute physical form."   His was not aiming for a singular, realized aesthetic formula but to expand the possibilities of painting; the transcendental in painting. Typical of such invention and exploration is this  painting  Untitled 1950 when the artist was only 34 years old and represented by one of the champions of the new American painting, Betty Parsons.  
A banner year for Pousette-Dart, the Museum of Modern Art acquired their first painting by the Minnesota born artist.  He worked on easel size works such as this painting an oil on masonite. At the same time Pousette-Dart was also working on larger scale works such as Path of the Hero, running over ten feet in length now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Both contain fields of color articulated by a highly sophisticated white hieroglyphic vocabulary. Rather than demonstrate an expressionist sensibility, Pousette-Dart harnesses his more cerebral ideas transforming thick areas of paint into a more refined composition of geometric forms akin to the pattern and forms of say a stained glass window. In a way he is looking back at Fugue, 1940 a black and white composition which makes use of a similar format of painting albeit smaller. Color and form are minimal, but what Pousette-Dart has maximized is the rhythmic and syncopated character of painting casting his ideas into purely symbolic terms that one might link to the pictograms of Adolph Gottlieb. Nonetheless, nature is always at the core of Pousette-Dart’s thinking and dreaming. Here he has transformed the local Ramapo Mountains—where he will eventually move with his family to live and work— into a complex series of articulated fragments linked by style, scale and color.  The painting’s imagery built on two large triangles and reduced to just two colors, cobalt blue and white all outlined in black.  Pousette-Dart symbols stacked in horizontal and vertical rows:  blue is ground, white is language, symbolic of light, consciousness and awareness . The painting maintains a mystical character images compounded that formulate a secret code and linked to the series of white paintings Pousette-Dart authored in the first half of the 1950s. Extraordinary in its beauty and rarity, this early 16th-century German painting of an illuminated manuscript showcases a masterful trompe l’oeil effect. Trabajó dentro del informalismo matérico, exploró en el campo de la abstracción geométrica y el cinetismo formando parte del Grupo de Trabajo MENTE. Años más tarde volvió al mundo de la figuración. Durante los últimos, la creación de Josep Navarro continúa gravitando entre la abstracción y la figuración. Nace en Francia, en Castelsarrasin (1931), una localidad situada en el Tarn-et-Garonne, muy cerca de Moissac y Montauban donde pasa los primeros años de su infancia hasta que se traslada, con parte de su familia, a Barcelona donde al poco tiempo estallará la Guerra Civil Española. En Barcelona se matriculó a los 14 años en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios. Pronto entra como aprendiz en una casa de imágenes religiosas, conocida como Casa Reixac, donde aprende el oficio de restauración, la técnica de la policromía, y sobre todo el arte de dorar. En ese entorno conocerá a Lluis M. Saumells Panadés y Ramón Sabi. En 1952 ingresa en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi de Barcelona. Durante el segundo curso, conoce al pintor Joan Serra, con quien descubrirá el Ampurdán y la Costa Brava. Gana el primer premio en la Exposición de pinturas universitarias y obtiene una beca que le ayuda a seguir estudiando, y participar en exposiciones colectivas en Barcelona y Madrid. Su estancia en Madrid le permitirá visitar con frecuencia el Museo del Prado, estudiando a los grandes maestros como Velázquez, Zurbarán, El Greco, Tiziano, etc. En 1957, obtiene una beca para completar su formación en París, asistiendo a los cursos de l’École des Beaux Arts y de l’Accadémie de la Grande Chaumière. En la capital francesa entra en contacto con un panorama artístico e intelectual distinto, que le abre las puertas a nuevas ideas. Durante su estancia en París recibe el encargo de la restauración de algunas de las salas del Elysée, trabajo muy reconocido por lo que es felicitado personalmente por el Presidente Monsieur Cothy. Más tarde realizará otra importante restauración: la de la oficina del Ministro de la Marina y finalmente el palco presidencial del Palais Garnier. Terminada su estancia en París, obtiene una nueva beca para ir a Londres donde se matricula en el Sant Martin’s School of Art (Londres). En Londres empieza a participar en algunas exposiciones colectivas e individuales y además obtiene el primer premio en la competición de carteles publicitarios del Ferrocarril Británico. En estos años de viajes entre París y Londres, Josep Navarro comienza a investigar dentro del informalismo matérico, corriente artística dominante en la Europa de mediados de siglo. En 1963, Josep Navarro regresa a Barcelona y entra en contacto con la Escuela de Barcelona, con Tàpies al frente. En esta época, Josep Navarro inicia su etapa informalista. Esta exploración matérica en la obra de Josep Navarro marcará la década de 1959 a 1969. El trabajo con texturas y materia va consolidando un lenguaje propio que desembocará en la inclusión de algunos elementos figurativos que marcarán el inicio del período marcado por la serie “Puertas”. La serie “Puertas”, es un trabajo basado en las puertas de Barcelona. En esta serie Josep Navarro establece una recuperación de la forma basada en la materia. Utiliza pigmentos naturales, mezclándolos entre sí para lograr el efecto del hierro, y de la madera. Estas puertas serán el elemento de transición entre su etapa informalista y su evolución hacia la abstracción geométrica. En 1970 se incorpora a los campos de trabajo del grupo MENTE (Muestra Española de Nuevas Tendencias Estéticas) impulsado principalmente por Daniel Giralt-Miracle y Joan Mas...
