About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Douglas Newton’s Quattro is a mesmerizing example of contemporary realism, capturing the essence of four vibrantly colored foil-wrapped chocolates. The artist masterfully conveys the reflective surfaces and the crinkled textures of the wrappers, making them appear almost tangible. With an impeccable eye for detail, Newton transforms an everyday object into a rich and captivating still life, inviting the viewer to appreciate the beauty in the seemingly mundane. The color palette in Quattro is both bold and harmonious, with hues of deep purple, fiery orange, lush green, and radiant pink all vying for attention. The metallic sheen of the wrappers reflects the surrounding light, creating a dynamic interplay of highlights and shadows. This meticulous attention to light adds an almost photographic realism to the painting, while the softened background provides contrast, allowing the chocolates to take center stage. Newton’s ability to capture texture and depth elevates the composition beyond traditional still life. The subtle cracks and creases in the wrappers hint at the fragility of the materials, while the cast shadows add a sense of realism and grounding. Quattro is not just a painting of chocolates—it’s a celebration of color, form, and light, skillfully brought to life with oil on canvas. Artist Biography: Douglas Newton is a Brooklyn-based painter whose work explores the transformative effects of light, translucency, and reflection through a hyperrealist lens. Working primarily from life, he captures the way light alters perception, particularly in his still life compositions. After attending Stanford University, Newton studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He spent several years working as an art director in Los Angeles and New York before transitioning to a full-time painting practice. His early work focused on suburban surrealism, depicting imagined landscapes, houses, and gardens, alongside an extensive study of the human figure. Over time, he gravitated toward still life painting, focusing on subjects such as food, toys, candy, and household objects—ultimately making still life the core of his artistic practice. Newton’s work has been exhibited in numerous group shows across the United States, as well as four solo exhibitions. His paintings are held in many private collections, and in 2012, he was selected for a residency at Fundación Valparaíso in Andalusia, Spain. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, where he shares a home with his wife, painter Kathleen Migliore-Newton. Their brownstone in Fort Greene is also home to their daughter, her husband, and their granddaughter. Immerse yourself in their exquisite detail and masterful realism from the comfort of your home, or visit our London gallery to experience them in person. “My art is inspired by the hidden beauty I see in the everyday world around me. Light, shadow, rich colors, and intricate textures all spark my creative process. I work directly from life, never relying on photographs, to capture the essence of my subjects and convey the way light interacts with them. Candy and its wrappers, especially foil and cellophane, have become a central theme in my work. Three Almond Kisses celebrates the beauty of candy, not just as an object, but as a vehicle for exploring light and reflection. This body of work marked the beginning of my focus on capturing the way light interacts with everyday objects, revealing their hidden beauty. Alongside my candy and still life paintings, my portfolio includes food still lifes, toys, household objects, figure drawings, and even surrealistic landscapes from my earlier work. In all of my pieces, I strive to capture those fleeting moments of beauty that often go unnoticed, transforming the mundane into something extraordinary.”- Douglas Newton
