Still Life with Pear and Grapes Quitton Edouard Péruwels 1841 –Brussels 1934 Belgian Painter Signature: Signed top right and dated 1881 Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions: Image size 19,5 x 29 cm, frame size 30 x 39,50 cm Biography: Quitton Edouard was born in 1842 in Péruwelz, Belgium. He was a painter of birds, genre-scenes, portraits, landscapes, compositions with figures and especially still lifes, often with poultry. He was also illustrator. He studied at the Academies of Tournai and Antwerp. He was a pupil of Joseph Stallaert (1825 – 1903) . He worked mainly in Antwerp and also he lived and worked in England for a while. Quitton Edouard exhibited at the Salon of Namur in 1874. He also exhibited at the 35th Exhibition at the Casino in Ghent in 1892 following the centenary of the “Royal Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Ghent”. He died in 1934 in Laeken, Belgium. Today his paintings can be found in private and public collections, including at the National Museum in Warsaw and in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Apples, black grapes and plums can be seen together with a strawberry and gooseberries. The fruit is shown lying amongst foliage and trailing ivy on a woodland bank. Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham in 1853, the son of the flower artist George Clare (1839-1890) and his wife Elizabeth Bowen. His brother Vincent Clare (1856-1917) also became an artist and both would have received tuition from their father who influenced their style and subject matter. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Kings Own regiment, but gave this up to become a full time artist.
