About the Item
French Expressionist Still Life, oil on canvas by Jean Marie Gouttin. The painting is signed bottom left and presented in a fine carved wood and gilt frame.
An intriguing composition of a Venetian masque, next to it a vase of flowers all laid on a table covered by a blue cloth. The painting is very reminiscent of the works of Bernard Buffet of the same period in the colour palette and the construction of the composition, especially the use of the black lines which give an added perspective. Gouttin has used the paint to create an impasto surface to the painting giving it great texture and interest.
Jean Marie Gouttin was born in 1922 in Nice, a city located on the French Riviera. From an early age, he was interested in art and painting. He studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nice, where he graduated in 1942. He is best known for his still lifes, portraits, nudes and landscapes in a very personal style.
During the Second World War, Gouttin joined the French army and served as a nurse. After the war, he returned to Nice and devoted himself entirely to his artistic career. He began to exhibit his works in the 1950s and quickly achieved some success.
Over the years, Gouttin participated in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, particularly in the United States. He is known for his unique and very personal style, which is distinguished by a marked Expressionist style, bright colours and bold shapes.
His portraits are often very expressive, capturing the essence of the person depicted with great sensitivity and emotion. His still lifes are also very realistic, with great attention to detail and texture of the objects depicted.
