Chrysanthemums painted in all their fresh glory captured just after a heavy rain shower. I made the ground very wet and used vivid green watercolour ink in a spontaneous way to describe the foliage, the heads painted in subtle pinks with gesso used for petals.

I have been painting flowers for over 20 years as an artist and as a senior textile designer selling prints to clients internationally including Valentino, Leonard, Paul and Joe and high street brands such as Topshop and Marks and Spencer. My love of florals started at a young age - brought up in Somerset in a family of horticulturists and an artist father, I would paint in the vast garden as much fascinated by the leaves as the flower heads themselves. I'm interested in exploring the fragility and beauty of the natural world, the lightness and translucency of petals and the texture and multiple colour in foliage. I work spontaneously in layers of mixed media on watercolour paper - gouache, watercolour ink and gesso - striking for a fluid tension between detailed areas and soft focus with always a strong compositional element.

BIOGRAPHY:
Antonio Petruccelli (1907-1994) began his career as a textile designer. He became a freelance illustrator in 1932 after winning several House Beautiful cover illustration contests.
In addition to 24 Fortune magazine covers, four New Yorker covers, several for House Beautiful, Collier’s, and other magazines he did numerous illustrations for Life magazine from the 1930s – 60s.
‘Tony was Mr. Versatility for Fortune. He could do anything, from charts and diagrams to maps, illustrations, covers, and caricatures,’ said Francis Brennan, the former art director for Fortune.
