About the Item

Marc Dennis is an American artist known for his hyper-realistic paintings that celebrate the subversive potential of art history, beauty and humor. In his "Desserts with Hair" series, the artist has created a set of small-scale works depicting delicious sweet treats that hold a shocking surprise. This tart, glistening with a fresh sugar glaze overtop ripe and succulent berries, seems to be the perfect pastry. However, after learning the title of this work, our appreciation and perhaps oncoming cravings for a similar snack for ourselves are turned to apprehension and hyper-alertness. By making us question our desire and reconsider our initial understanding of a seemingly innocuous work, Dennis deploys his playful and sometimes disarming humor.

Currently available are this delicious slice of cherry cheesecake, a slice of cherry pie with vanilla ice cream, an equally gorgeous strawberry parfait sundae, and a bowl of mixed berries with whipped cream: Mary Ellen Johnson "Cherry Cheesecake" 2010 Oil on Wood Panel 38 x 27.5 Inches Note: This painting is framed in dark wood. THE BACKGROUND IS A VERY LIGHT CREAM SOLID COLOR WITH THE SHADOW. The artist has also completed many commissioned food paintings including the Canadian Government's request for images of 5 of Canada's favorite foods which subsequently became stamp images - and The Cheesecake Factory's two commissions for their corporate headquarters and the owners' Malibu beach house. A quote from the artist: “I make the panels large to give a monumental feeling to the painting when viewed. These large images not only confront the viewer with their size but with their tremendous sense of extravagance. My work explores the deep connection that food has with humanity.” Mary Ellen Johnson Johnson further describes herself as a ‘Precision Realist’ whose primary subject is food. Sold works include paintings of PB & J sandwiches, pancakes with blueberries and syrup, banana splits, ice cream, hot dogs, cupcakes, waffles, muscles and sushi, among others. Unequaled for their brilliance and dramatic depictions of mundane subjects with their connotations of nostalgia, comfort and tradition, it is also her scale, cropping and over the top technical skill that renders these works so overwhelmingly appealing! "Cream puff with strawberries" Dutch Fine Realist Painting of Still-Life Pastry
By René Smoorenburg
Located in Utrecht, NL
During his successful career as a goldsmith the desire to paint grew on Dutch artist René Smoorenburg (1954). The attention to detail, which was of great importance in his work as a goldsmith, proved of great value in painting his one of a kind still life’s. Step into a world where indulgence meets precision, and where everyday objects are elevated to timeless beauty. In “Cream Puff with Wild Strawberries”, Dutch fine painter René Smoorenburg captures a fleeting moment of sweetness with astonishing realism and elegance. At first glance, the painting is almost photographic: the gleaming swirl of fresh cream, the delicate texture of the puff pastry, and the deep, ruby-red glow of wild strawberries seem almost tangible—so vivid you can taste them. But this is more than just visual seduction. Look closer, and you'll find a perfect balance of composition, texture, and light that reflects the artist’s masterful control of his craft. His work stands in the long tradition of Dutch still life painting, originated in the seventeenth century, with its highly refined and meticulously executed depiction of reality. His work is in the spirit of many of those great works but retains its own distinctive style. Although René Smoorenburg works at a few paintings at the same time, the time it takes him to finish one individual painting amounts six months. Because of his very detailed style of painting, this time span is necessary to complete the work with a lot of patience and endurance. In contrast to the masters of the Golden Age, he chooses to emphasize the vulnerability, fragility and imperfection of everyday objects in his still life’s. According to René Smoorenburg, beauty is not perfection, but in the trace of the past and the evidence of enduring ravages of time. René Smoorenburg finds his sources of inspiration at antique fairs and markets: worn shoes...
