About the Item

Signed lower left, 'M. Streckenbach' for Max Theodore Streckenbach (German, 1863-1936) and painted circa 1900. Framed dimensions: 37 H x 3 D x 33.25 W inches Born in Eckernförde, Germany, Max Theodore Streckenbach came late to his professional career as a fine artist having first studied and practiced medicine. During this early period, he continued to develop a growing interest in botany and made numerous paintings and sketches of flowers and plants. By 1900, he had given up the practice of medicine and become a professional artist, focusing on floral still-lives, particularly in the style of the French master, Henri Fantin-Latour whose work he particularly admired. Streckenbach continues to be known for his Impressionist floral bouquets, often centred in the composition and shown bathed in a soft ambient light with naturalistic touches. Max Streckenbach achieved success as an artist in his own time and a popular series of lithographic floral prints was produced from his work. A retrospective of Streckenbach's work was held at the Eckernförde Museum in 2006. We are pleased to offer this luminous floral still life, dating to circa 1900 and displayed in a fine and period, carved giltwood frame. Reference: E.
