Elsie Stevenson (1890–1965) was an American painter and printmaker.
Beulah Stevenson, (1875-1965) American painter and printmaker. Born in Brooklyn Heights, Beulah (Elsie Sloan) Stevenson lived there her entire life. In New York she studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, where her instructors included Ashcan artist John Sloan; in Provincetown, she worked and studied with Abstract Expressionist artist Hans Hofmann (an influential teacher whose students included many notable artists including Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Irene Rice Pereira, Gerome Kamrowski, Fritz Bultman, Wolf Kahn, Marisol Escobar and Beulah Stevenson), a long-time curator at the Brooklyn Museum, was also among his pupils. Her work appeared in many group shows, and she won a number of awards. She was a curator at the Brooklyn Museum for many years, and that museum owns a number of examples of her work, as do the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library. Stevenson maintained many professional associations during her career; she was president of the New York Society of Women Artists, a board member of the National Association of Women Artists, and a vice-president of the Brooklyn Society of Artists, Art Institute of Chicago, International Graphic Society Inc., Philadelphia Print Club, Provincetown Art Association and the Creative Artist's Association. She also belonged to the American Artists' Congress which promoted social-realist style of American scene painting, she left to join the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors established To Promote Avant-Garde Art. Stevenson was said by a friend to have destroyed many of her papers prior to her death, but a collection was donated to the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.

David T. Kessler was born in Park Ridge, New Jersey in 1950. He attended Arizona State University, where he received the award for Outstanding Graduate in Studio Art in 1972. In 1973, David was one of 12 painters accepted into the graduate program at The San Francisco Art Institute, where he received his M.F.A. in 1975. He is well known for his holographic airbrush paintings on aluminum. His paintings have been exhibited internationally since 1977, with shows in Tokyo, Strasbourg, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Scottsdale, and New York. Kessler's paintings are in the permanent collections of The Strasbourg Contemporary Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Minnesota Museum of Art, The Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, The Santa Barbara Museum, The Barrington Art Center, and others. Within Arizona, his work is in the collections of The Phoenix Art Museum, The Scottsdale Center for the Arts, The Tucson Museum of Art, Arizona State University Art Museum, and Northern Arizona University Art Museum.
Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media. An American art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Photorealism evolved from Pop Art as a counter to Abstract Expressionism as well as Minimalist art movements. Though Photorealists share some aspects of American realists, such as Edward Hopper, they tried to set themselves as much apart from traditional realists as they did Abstract Expressionists. Photorealists were much more influenced by the work of Pop artists and were reacting against Abstract Expressionism. The word Photorealism was coined by Louis K. Meisel in 1969 and appeared in print for the first time in 1970 in a Whitney Museum catalogue for the show "Twenty-two Realists." It is also sometimes labeled as Super-Realism, New Realism, Sharp Focus Realism, or Hyper-Realism.
The first generation of American Photorealists includes the painters Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Charles Bell, Audrey Flack, Don Eddy, Robert Bechtle, Ron Kleemann, Richard McLean, John Salt, John Kacere, and Robert Cottingham. Photorealism's influence and popularity continues to grow, with new books such as Juxtapoz's 2014 book entitled Hyperreal detailing current trends within the artistic genre.

'Still Life with Fruit', oil on board (1968), by Juliane Solignac. An engaging yet unusual artwork with vibrant colours, thickly applied with a painting knife. Nonetheless, through the thick paint there is an unfinished quality to the work leaving the impression that the raw canvas - or board in this case - is revealed. Some of the colour seems to have been scored on to the work with an artist's knife leaving lines and creating angles as in a cubist painting. There are layers of paint with no evident brush strokes. One may believe in this instance, Madame Solignac used this technique to create a visual effect which would deliberately have upset traditionalists. Be reminded that the Impressionists were criticised for creating patchy, incomplete works because there were strong notions about the correct way to paint in those days. Picasso once said, 'To finish a work is to kill it.' It is unsure how Mme Solignac would have felt about that. Regardless of this conjecture, the painting is colourful, compelling and rewards the viewer with a curious interest. The work is in fair vintage condition, newly framed with a linen slip. It is signed: 'Julian Solignac 68'.
About the Artist: Juliane Solignac (born 1904). Regrettably, there is not much information available about the artist (including what year she may have died). She is referenced as a resident artist in Montmartre in the 1930s, one of only a handful of women in an otherwise sea of male names. In addition, Solignac is mentioned in both French and Dutch references as a creator of fabrics. These may have been more artistic 'tapis' which are hung on the wall like a painting. A Dutch museum references having one of her designs in their collection. A serene, Parisian cityscape showing an aerial perspective of the Seine and the Île Saint-Louis viewed from above the Quai des Célestins, and looking towards the Île de la Cité and Notre Dame in the distance.
This early Danish Post-Impressionist artist first studied with Marie Sandholt and Astrid Holm at the Copenhagen Art Academy and, subsequently, at the School of Graphics (1929-31). Christensen continued his studies while traveling widely in Europe, including to Germany and Austria (1913-14), Paris (1917-23) and to Budapest and Vienna (1934). In 1935, he was awarded the Michaelsen Scholarship which enabled him to remain in Paris during the late 1930's. During intense period of development and creativity, he moved away from the bold colors and defined forms of his earlier Fauve and Cubist periods and began to explore the creation of predominantly single-color works, often in blues or greens accented with subtle shades of white. After the Second World War, he returned frequently to paint in Paris.
Kay Christensen, like his friend, Rainer Maria Rilke, followed a solitary artistic path in which his imagery was characterized by a personal aesthetic of sensuality combined with a spirited boldness and expressive force. He exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Christensen's work is held in private and public collections including the State Art Museum of Denmark and Copenhagen's Metropolitan Museum, among others.
