About the Item
This gem of a set design or theatre design was possibly done prior to the artist coming to the United States from Russia. Born in Kiev, this artist was talented and given the distinction of studying at the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg. He became a prominent teacher but then was relieved to be given an assignment in the United States and he did not return to his native country - this was in 1924.
The artist is known to have done other set and theatre designs as well as illustrations for important novels. It is possible due to the condition of this piece - which there is evident wear to the paper - that it was rolled and brought to this country in that manner. He brought a limited amount of rolled artworks and retained them throughout his life as once in the United States he moved to painting in an American style and selling and exhibiting those works.
Ballet and theatre were important cultural enjoyments in St Petersburg. This work is intriguing and can take some analyzation as to what production it could have been.
It is is framed in a fine gold leaf frame - hand carved with a narrow mat and glass. A marvelous and interesting work for someone in the arts!

Simka Simkhovitch
Simka Simkhovitch was born near the city of Kiev, Russia. When he was 7, he spent a year in bed with a severe case of measles. To amuse himself he used to sketch an old mill outside his window, and thus decided to become an artist. He studied at an art school in Odessa and was recommended to attend the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg (a singular honor in Russia at the time) before the war and revolution. Swept up into the army before he could attend, his work was hung in the Museum of Revolution in Leningrad. He resumed his studies in 1914 and graduated four years later. He was sent to the United States in 1924 to do illustrations for Soviet textbooks. He quickly applied for and gained U.S. citizenship. Simkhovitch integrated with the art world immediately and galleries such as Midtown Galleries and Marie Sterner took him on as part of their stable of artists. He also was employed by the WPA and executed major mural commissions throughout the country. One of his largest commissions was the Mississippi Court House. Life magazine profiled him twice with full-length features on his life here in this country as an artist. When he died at an early age, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York offered to do a retrospective and the widow denied the possibility and simply put his works away in storage. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of certain classicism, Simkhovitch’s compositions are often built up in a complicated but well-managed counterpoint. But at heart, he is a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.

Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching.
The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style.
In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance!
