Abstract Paintings

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

"Concatenation No #3" Blue, Pink, and Pink Striped Contemporary Abstract
Located in Houston, TX
Contemporary abstract geometric painting by artist Mark Byckowski. The piece features horizontal lines with a variety of vivid colors of blue, pink and purple painted against a bright white background. Each of Byckowski's work features a bright red line at the bottom right corner. Signed, titled, and dated on reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: Mark Byckowski was born March 18, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. He remained in and out of the Chicago area until moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1990. In 2016 moved to Livingston, Texas where he currently resides. At an early age, he began drawing, studying, and creating art which has continued throughout his life. His artwork has changed and evolved through different periods and styles that span for decades. In the early years, he was influenced by traditional representational artists and illustrators, then impressionism, surrealism, and avant-garde of modernism captured his imagination. His artistic talent eventually led him to Northern Illinois University where he received Dean List Honors in Fine Art with an emphasis in the studio painting. As a studio artist he has produced a body of work in various media painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and computer art also known as digital art. While in college the artist began searching for an original idea and style of his own. In 1979 when the first apple personal computers became available in the art department. He immediately knew the technology would eventually influence the direction of fine art in the future. It took time to learn how to program and explore the possibilities of computers as a new tool in the creation of art. Personal computers back then did not have the capabilities they have today and were not user-friendly. There were only two fine artists Mark Pinson and I working with computer technology back then. We worked on our own ideas and after completing the programs and turning them into paintings and drawings we collaborated and mounted a two-man exhibition. My first program was a series of interconnected images entitled “Concatenation” paintings and drawings created from the program were exhibited with Mark Pinson’s work entitled “Random” in a two- man show at The Holmes Center Gallery, Northern Illinois University on November 30, 1980. The second program entitled “Visual Music” the paintings and drawings exhibited in a one man show at The Recital Hall Music Building Gallery, Northern Illinois University on April 26, 1981. Followed by an exhibit sponsored by Illinois Bell, works on paper selected a drawing from the Visual Music series for “A New Generation of Artists” at The Lobby Gallery, 225 West Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois, May 14 through June 12, 1981. The artist has participated in exhibitions dating back to 1974. The above exhibitions were selected because they marked a new beginning and direction in the artist’s work that continues to the present day. Other positions held in the Fine Art field include: 1984-1985- Austin Galleries, Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois (Main Gallery) and other locations Fine Art Consultant / Gallery Director 1982-1984- Atlas Galleries, Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois (Main Gallery) and other locations Fine Art Consultant / Assistant Gallery Director Artist Statement: Subject matter for computer art, painting, and drawing Mark S. Byckowski In 1979 searching for a for an original idea and style of my own I began looking for abstract ideas that I could program with a computer for a new a paintings series. I decided on an idea called “Concatenation” a series beginning from the original image undergoing a transformational change from the previous image connected in a linked series. Example: Image 1 is the original, image 2 changes image 1 by adding a new line, and image 3 changes image 2 by adding an additional new line. Continually changing the previous image by adding an additional line etc. In 1980 I began working on a new abstract idea that I could again program with a computer for a new painting and drawing series. The similarities between music and art intrigued me and began thinking about how I could create a visual representation of musical sound. In music notes are arrangements turned into compositions. In art color is also, arranged into compositions and both seek aesthetic rhythms and harmony. Depending on what notes or colors used can also, affect different emotions and moods. The Artists painting process Step one: Create the computer drawing. For years I have used Microsoft classic paint to create drawings. It allows me to arrange an aesthetic composition and select a color scheme in advance. I can make changes easily until I am satisfied. Step two: I build a custom stretcher frame with support bars and corner braces. Step three: Measure and Stretch the canvas onto the frame pulling the canvas and using a staple gun...

Indian Summer
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Dan Christensen (1942-2007) is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost abstract artist. Over the course his lengthy career, Christensen was devoted to exploring and expanding the constantly shifting aesthetics of 20th century abstraction. Christensen established his reputation at the end of the 1960s, by using spray guns to create colorful stacks, loops, and lines in his artworks. This body of work was considered by the legendary art critic Clement Greenberg among the most original abstract paintings of the decade. Unlike many of his contemporaries who dedicated themselves to a signature style, Christensen was unrelentingly curious and allowed his dynamic version of abstraction to evolve as he tried new techniques and varied his aesthetic. During the 1980's in particular, Christensen focused on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colours over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists. The aesthetic complexity he achieved with these combined techniques are perfectly demonstrated in this later untitled work (aka "Indian Summer...

"Jake Berthot Untitled 1985 Oil On Linen"
By Jake Berthot
Located in Bristol, CT
Art Sz: 20"H x 18"W Frame Sz: 23 1/2"H x 21 1/2"W Signed and dated to verso 'J Berthot 85' Provenance: Private Collection Acquired in 1988 from the Nielsen Gallery 179 Newbury Street Boston, MA. Jake Berthot (1939–2014) was an American artist whose abstract paintings contained elements of both the minimalist and expressionist styles. During the first 36 years of his career his paintings were entirely non-figurative. His style changed in 1995 when he moved his studio from New York City to a rural community in upstate New York. While continuing to be abstract his paintings thereafter contained figurative elements and were seen to have greater emotional content. Throughout his career his work frequently appeared in solo and group exhibitions in both commercial and public galleries. It has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, National Gallery of Art, and other major American art museums. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981 and a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1983. During the 1980s Berthot continued to show at the McKee Gallery. He also showed at the Cava Gallery, Philadelphia, in 1987 and the Nielson Gallery, Boston, in 1998 and 2000. During this time his work continued to appear in museum exhibitions including the Museum of Modern Art. The Museum of Modern Art included works by Berthot in "New Works on Paper" (1981), "An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture" (1984), and "Contrasts of Form: Geometric Abstract Art, 1910-1980" (1985). His work was also included in exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum (1984), the galleries of Muhlenberg and Lafayette colleges (1984), Mandeville Gallery, University of California, San Diego (1986), the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1987). In 1988 he was given a retrospective exhibition at the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University. Until about 2004 he continued to be represented by the McKee Gallery and thereafter by the Betty Cunningham Gallery which, since his death, has also represented his estate. Museum exhibitions from the early 1990s include: "Slow Art: Painting in New York Now" at P.S.1, Long Island City, New York (1992), "Square Painting/Plane Painting at the Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle, Washington (1997), "Jake Berthot" at the Phillips Collection...

Chinese American Abstract Expressionist Zen Space Painting WangMing Color School
Located in Surfside, FL
Wang Ming "Enter the World of Infinity" Acrylic paint on Japon paper mounted on canvas Dimensions: H: 39 inches: W: 25 inches WANG MING WANG Artist Ming Wang, born November 4, 1921, died peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2016 in Bethesda. Ming Wang was born in Tianjin, China and was a pilot in Chinese Nationalist Air Force during WWII. Artist Wang Ming's journey began in the 1940s. As he worked as an air traffic controller in Taiwan, he became interested in the beauty of the sky. He was a young man then, having fled from Japanese-occupied China in 1939 at age 18. He came to the US for further military training where he met his first wife, the late Suen Chin. In 1949, Wang went Taiwan to escape the Communist takeover of China. He rejoined his wife and young son in Washington DC in 1951. To support a growing family, Wang founded the National Art and Frame shop in Washington DC. He studied art independently and developed his unique artistic style melding modern art with traditional Chinese calligraphy. His paintings, done with a mixture of inks and acrylics on fine paper, are a happy marriage of traditional Chinese disciplines with Western art as it has been handled by Joan Miro and Paul Klee. His works are minimalist and abstract, marked with good design and extremely sensitive use of color. The influence of 1950s American art and abstract expressionism is also clear in his work, and he exhibited with such Washington Color School luminaries as Kenneth Noland and Gene Davis in the 1960s. He later taught calligraphy at George Washington University. Years before the Hubble Telescope began broadcasting images of rainbow clouds and blood red stars, Ming used art to convey what he imagined space to be. His work captured the attention of James Dean, the National Air and Space Museum's first art collector, who purchased two of his pieces.
