This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. Born in Walsall near London, England on June 12, 1901, William Winthrop Ward immigrated to Boston in 1916 and spent much of his youth boating off the coast of Massachusetts. The painting depicts HMS Britannia broadside with several other war ships of the British fleet, most likely returning from the Mediterranean.
In the foreground are several small boats with sailors variously occupied attending to them. A yacht with a crowded deck is visible on the left. In the center foreground there is a barrel or possibly a buoy in the water, a device commonly employed in some of Thomas's paintings.
To the verso is an old auction label from the 1920s and another partial label, there are also some annotations on the stretcher with details of photographic images of the painting.
There is also an old label of ownership "Mrs. Strange 6 Elvaston Place", this address was a large Georgian house in the prestigious London borough of South Kensington.

Halmstad itself, a town that straddles the Nissan river, retains much of its early 20th-century character in its city core. Low brick and half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, dot the landscape. The town center on the west side of Nissan is bordered by remnants of early 17th-century fortifications, including the 1600s castle, Norre Port from 1601, and King Charles XI's path along the old fortress wall. At the heart of the town is Stora Torg with Carl Milles' Europa and the Bull fountain from 1926, and the town hall built in 1938. The city layout, influenced by Renaissance planning, converges at Stora Torg, which is also home to the town's sole medieval building, the brick hall church of St. Nikolai from the 14th century.
