Zamy Steynovitz was bon in Liegnitz Poland, in 1951. He immigrated to Israel in 1957. The aspiration to be a painter stems from his childhood and before leaving Poland, he won the first prize in an art competition for children. Zamy was formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and at the Royal Academy of London. Upon completing his studies, Zamy earnestly pursued his career and establish his place in the art world by displaying his work in one man exhibits and arts fairs around the world. His art displays chromatic and thematic richness and his choice of subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition, his Eastern European Jewish heritage and folklore. Zamy’s popular themes include Paris cafes, still-life, flowers, circuses and landscapes. Circus with acrobats and Harlequin. In the early stages of his career, he was partial to rich pastels and light brush strokes. In the early 1980s, Zamy visited South America, where the new surroundings enhanced his work with local brightness and color. His art gained chromatic power and his palette became richer in tones as the textures became thicker and the background darker and more colorful. These changes coupled with his thematic persistence allowed him to develop into a sensitive and mature artist. Zamy expresses a universal humanistic vision in his creations: man’s connection to his heritage and physical surroundings, two imperative aspects of our lives that should be heralded during these estranged technological times. As a result of his devotion to world peace, Zamy is known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway. He is acquainted with many Nobel Prize winners including Anwar Sadat, Mehahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmund Tutu and Oscar Arias, the ex-President of Costa Rica, along with many other politicians and artists. Zamy tragically passed away in September 2000. The work is accompanied by a critical card by Dr. Federica Spadotto The splendid painting proposed sees portrayed, bare and stretched out on a red brocade cloth in gold sprinkled with roses, a refined and sensual Venus, in a composition with a profound symbolic value, and arriving at the perfect representation of the Renaissance woman who, like Venus, becomes an allegory love, eros, beauty and fertility. The canvas is part of the prestigious Venetian artistic and cultural environment of the second half of the sixteenth century, whose distinctive distinctive trait can be traced back to its cosmopolitan vocation. This characteristic, as Dr. Spadotto noted in her in-depth study, belongs to the same physiology of the Venetian capital, that is, being a distinctly commercial city located in a strategic point with respect to trade. Representing one of the liveliest ports in the Mediterranean also meant witnessing the continuous passage not only of goods, but of men, ideas, suggestions from distant countries, which influenced not only the taste of their people, but above all art. This happened thanks to the circulation of prints, as well as pictorial specimens, to which are added the stays of great foreign artists and, above all, the permanence in the capital of a non-negligible number of Dutch, Flemish and German masters. An emblematic case in this regard comes from Pauwels Franck (Antwerp, 1540 - Venice, 1596), better known as Paolo Fiammingo, who established himself in his native city at a young age - in 1561 a figure enrolled in the Guild of San Luca - and arrived in Venice in 1573. . He resided in Venice from 1584 until his death, although the stylistic and formal references of some of his works have led critics to believe that in previous years he had undertaken a journey to central Italy, or to Florence and Rome, where he would have metabolized the lively cultural debate that permeated these cities and which, on the other hand, seemed completely absent in Venice. Here Paolo will be fascinated by the sense of color and by the atmospheric component fixed on the canvas by Jacopo Tintoretto (Venice 1518 - 1594), of which he becomes a collaborator, to undergo, around 1590, the suggestion of Paolo Caliari...

The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. Michele Felice Cornè, considered to be Salem, Massachusetts’ most versatile early nineteenth century artist, painted this remarkable pair of paintings about a decade after he arrived in America from Naples, Italy. Cornè worked and lived in Salem from 1800-06 when he moved to Boston. During his Boston tenure (1807-22) the artist was noted for painting portraits of Boston ships and naval battles of the War of 1812, as well as taking on major mural commissions. This charming pair of paintings, each of two children playing, were possibly intended as overdoor decorations for a Federal period house. Cornè’s most ambitious decorations were the wall murals which he painted for the Sullivan Dorr house in Providence in 1810. And this pair of paintings seems to date from about the same period. From 1822 to his death in 1845 he lived in Newport, Rhode Island. The pair of paintings of Children playing was long in the famous Americana collection of Benjamin Flayderman. Flayderman was said to have set the standard for collecting in American furniture and decorative arts in the 1920s. Much of his collection was sold at a legendary sale at the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries (predecessor of Parke-Burnet and Sotheby’s, New York) in April of 1931. These paintings, however, were retained by Flayderman and descended in his family. Cornè was instrumental in transferring current Neapolitan painting techniques as well as Italian landscape themes to America. On the subject of Cornè's non-marine work, Nina Fletcher Little, the Cornè expert, stated: “Although Cornè's claim to twentieth century recognition has rested chiefly on his marine subjects, it is becoming increasingly apparent that he was equally successful in the charming landscapes he placed upon overmantles, fireboards, and framed canvases. Many depict the rolling countryside of his native Italy, which he copied from romantic engravings. These compositions, featuring grazing cows and frolicking peasants, are extremely colorful and picturesque. Arched bridges, steepled churches, crenellated castles, and round stone towers form most decorative backgrounds.” The two paintings: Two Children at Play with a White Bird and Two Children Playing recall earlier European and Italian models. Cherub paintings were popular throughout western Europe in the last quarter of the 18th century. But these Cornè paintings also recall the Renaissance paintings of putti such as the little angels by Raphael, painted as part of his Sistine Madonna, and lately enjoying greatly renewed popularity and notice. Cornè often used Italian old master models as a basis for landscape or figure paintings. Cornè was born on the island of Elba in 1752. During the Napoleonic Wars, he sought refuge and sailed to America on the ship Mount Vernon commanded by Elias Hasket Derby, Jr., at whose father's house Cornè resided in Salem. The artist arrived in Salem, Massachusetts in July of 1800. Derby, impressed by the Neapolitan marine paintings that he had seen and collected during his Mediterranean voyages of the late eighteenth century, sought to make the same skills available in Salem by encouraging Cornè to live and work in that town. Cornè was quite successful in transferring the current Neapolitan decorative painting to America, and his popularity grew rapidly. Cornè attracted the patronage of many in Salem, and was introduced to Samuel McIntire with whom he worked on many of Salem's houses. Between 1807 and 1809 he was at 27 Hanover Street in Boston, but by 1810 the city directories list him at 61 Middle Street. By 1822, he was settled in Newport, Rhode Island and received enough patronage to support him the rest of his life. Cornè is well represented in public and private collections including the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, the Peabody-Essex Museum of Salem, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, New Haven Colony Historical Society, the New York Historical Society, Newport Historical Society, Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Rhode Island Historical Society, the Smithsonian Institution, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the United States Department of State, the United States Naval Academy...
