ABT Dancer Lupe Serrano & Rudolph Nureyev Rehearsing for Television, Signed
Located in Senoia, GA
11 x 14" vintage silver gelatin photograph of American Ballet Theater ballerina Lupe Serrano and Rudolf Nureyev rehearsing at ABT for a television appearance, 1962. Signed by Jack Mitchell. Comes directly from the Jack Mitchell Archives with a certificate of authenticity.
Jack Mitchell, (1925-2013) bulging photographic portfolio of actors, writers, painters, musicians and especially dancers describes a pictorial history of the arts in the late 20th century. Mr. Mitchell, who took hundreds of pictures for The New York Times, was both a portraitist and a capturer of complex motion. An expert in lighting, he worked mostly, though not entirely, in black and white, and he was known — by his subjects, by the magazine and newspaper editors he worked for, and by critics — as someone who could make a photograph reveal character.
Jack Mitchell was the official photographer for the American Ballet Theater, and he chronicled the work of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for more than thirty years. When he retired in 1995, he had fulfilled more than 5,000 assignments in black and white, and nearly a thousand in color. He photographed more than 160 covers for Dance magazine, and his photos have appeared in Time, Life, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Vogue and many other publications.
Mitchell’s photographs are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, among others. The 2019 USPS Black Heritage postage stamp honoring American performer Gregory Hines was made from a Jack Mitchell photograph, and a Jack Mitchell photograph of Audre Lorde...

Hand-signed by artist, two silkscreen prints; the colophon sheet is hand signed by Andy Warhol; no signature on sheet with teletype

Unframed
Note: measurements are for each sheet
Catalogue Raisonne Reference: FS II.32-42 (not illustrated)
Silkscreened colophon sheet of the edition XVII of the iconic "Flash" Portfolio; hand signed and uniquely numbered by Andy Warhol, plus silkscreened print with teletype text. These two prints from Warhol's iconic "Flash Portfolio" were selected for inclusion in the blockbuster Andy Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 2019. (see photos). The plaque on the Whitney exhibition (also see included photo) describes the portfolio as follows:" These screenprints reflect Warhol's ongoing interest in the Kennedy assassination, an obsession that intensified following the release of the Warren Commission report and the publication of stills from a short home movie of the event, published by bystander Abraham Zapruder. Flash - November 22, 1963 is an unbound Artists Book with text based upon the original Associated Press newswire bulletins. For his illustrations, Warhol appropriated the recurring image of Kennedy from a 1960 campaign poster, and sourced the remaining photographs, including pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald and an ad for the type of rifle used, from Life's [Magazine] sustained coverage of the assassination and its aftermath.."
The present sheet begins with the following teletyped text:
"THE TWO WOUNDED MEN WERE RUSHED TO EMERGENCY ROOMS, AND THE HOSPITAL'S PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM RANG WITH CALLS FOR ALL STAFF DOCTORS.
FLASH
DALLAS - TWO PRIESTS SUMMONED TO KENNEDY X IN EMERGENCY ROOM
BULLETIN 3RD ADD 2ND LEAD KENNEDY XX DOCTORS
TWO PRIESTS ENTERED THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE THE PRESIDENT WAS BEING TREATED AT 12:49 P.M. (CST).
THERE WAS STILL NO OFFICIAL WORD ON THE PRESIDENT'S CONDITION. ASSISTANT WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY MALCOLM XXX KILDUFF SAID
"I JUST CAN'T SAY. I JUST CAN'T SAY."
FLASH --
PRIESTS SAY KENNEDY DEAD. ."""
(the text on the page continues; this is just a partial excerpt.)
Racolin Press, Briarcliff Manor, New York
Two Andy Warhol silkscreens on white wove paper comprising the signed colophon and text pages of his iconic 1968 "Flash" Portfolio, as well as Warhol's wraparound silkscreen of the distinctive teletype text. The colophon page silkscreen is hand signed by Andy Warhol and uniquely numbered XVII in pencil from the edition of 26, which, it expressly states, was not for sale. The second silkscreen sheet features teletype print describing events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy - the defining event of a generation as contemporaneously re-imagined by the most important Pop artist of the era.
Warhol created the "Flash - November 22, 1963" portfolio of prints in 1968 to depict the continuing media spectacle surrounding JFK's assassination. He named the portfolio after the news flash Teletype texts that reported the assassination and its aftermath - the first major news event played out live on TV. The Flash portfolio includes a series of eleven silkscreens depicting President Kennedy smiling broadly, a presidential seal with bullet holes through it, and other symbolic representations of that tragedy. The portfolio's cover includes an image of the New York World-Telegram front page with the headline "President Shot Dead." Warhol used screen printed...

Located in Surfside, FL
The Most Important Film Ever Made, 1972
Color screen print and collage, from the edition of 70.
15 x 17 in
38.1 x 43.2 cm
Published by the artist with Marlborough Graphics at the Kelpra studio in 1972. This work is also in the collections of TATE London and the Victoria & Albert Museum. the price reflects the fact that there is no backing page.
Stylistically, these are hybrid works, influenced by Pop art and the modernist tradition of the Readymade, a work of art created when a mundane found object is named as an artwork and set in an art context. This avant-garde concept was originally invented by the Dada master Marcel Duchamp early in the twentieth century. In the 1960s it received renewed attention at a time when artistic norms were again being questioned. Reacting to Andy Warhol’s Pop imagery, Kitaj poignantly called his repurposed lithograph and silkscreen book covers “his soup can, his Liz Taylor.” The blatant use of images taken directly from commercial sources situates In Our Time as a precursor of appropriation art. In turning book covers into works of art, Kitaj is offering fragments of a history of knowledge, in which the content of each volume is at once mysterious and absent. Coming from this passionate bibliophile, the series is nothing less than an intellectual self-portrait.

Christo
Monuments and Projects, 1968
Rare Limited Edition Lithograph and offset lithograph
Hand signed, dated and numbered 5/100 by Christo on the lower left front
Published by the ICA, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
23.25 x 18.5 inches
Unframed
This hand signed and numbered offset lithograph is one of the more elusive and desirable early Christo exhibition invitations, published on the occasion of his groundbreaking exhibition at the ICA in Philadelphia, when Christo was only 33 - and hand signed and numbered by Christo on the front, making it a true collectors' item.
"...By mid-September 1968, Christo's attention focused on Monuments and Projects, his one-man exhibition opening October 4 at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art. It included earlier work and four on-site projects: 1,240 Oil Barrels Mastaba, Two Tons of Wrapped Hay, Two Wrapped Trees, and Seven Wrapped Women.
Suzanne Delehanty, the assistant of ICA director Stephen Prokopoff, remembered: "I had to round up fifteen hundred-plus oil barrels, the equivalent of five freight cars full. They were to construct a truncated pyramid in our large fifty-by-fifty-foot gallery. Getting them wasn't easy. It meant disrupting oil companies' operations, since drums are needed at every stage of the delivery cycle. The materials Christo chose engaged this invisible system. Negotiations for loaning barrels were made with various companies by Stephen and Nathaniel Lieb, an ICA board member. I remember that one company wouldn't lend, but insisted on selling their barrels to us; after we returned them, they would give a refund—it was their way of doing a loan receipt. I had to convince the university business office not to worry about the ten- or fifteen-thousand-dollar invoice. We borrowed oil barrels from several companies: some did a straight loan based on an exchange of letters; others used their own system of inventory control. It was fascinating."
While the multicolored oil barrels were stacked to form a massive mastaba in the ICA ground-floor entry gallery, two other works, Two Wrapped Trees and Two Tons of Wrapped Hay, took shape on the level above. The installation crew, paid M.F.A. students, alternated between unloading barrels and making forays into the countryside to gather bales of hay. Suzanne Delehanty reflected, "The bales of hay were stacked, creating a bulky structure, covered with tarpaulin and tied with rope."
Another ICA work lasted only a few hours. When dinner guests arrived, seven wrapped female nudes awaited them. Each had been placed on a pedestal. Harry Shunk...
