This work by Swiss ecclesiastical genre painter Alfred Weber, best known for his humorous and meticulously detailed paintings, features a cardinal enjoying his leisure time. Weber's talent for rendering opulent interiors and his keen sense of comic narrative are evident in this painting. The cardinal, looking blissfully content, sits in his lavish living space playing the violin, accompanied by a flutist.

The Knight's Farewell
Oil on canvas
124 x 64 cm
A very beautiful painting, romantic and very decorative, both monumental in its composition and touching in its subject, especially since it stands out in a tight frame. The knight's farewell to his beloved is represented on a background marked by naturalism with its meadow, its flowers, its wood, its river and its very beautiful colors. The painting is of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and he is certainly French as indicated by the mtamp of the canvas merchant on the back of the canvas (the Jules Chauvin house which was active at 33 rue du Dragon in Paris between 1895 and 1937). The style of our painting is romantic, even picturesque. The knight carries the "Reichsadler", the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the lady a satchel with various signs including bear paw prints. The style is naturalistic and reminds of the English painters of the 1890s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau with religious and medieval themes and it is very close to nature with their settings of meadow, flowers and woods. The English art historian John Christian spoke of the last English Romantics in relation to these painters of the end of the century, Burne-Jones, Stanley Spencer or John William Waterhouse. Those motifs are also found here, of the meadow, flowers, wood and river that we often see in Waterhouse's art in particular. As for the composition, that reminds in particular of the English woman painter of Austrian origin Marianne Stokes...

Prang's Easter by Louis Rhead, Art Nouveau Japon lithograph, edition of 25, 1897
By Louis Rhead
Located in Chicago, IL
“America was quick to reveal strong Art Nouveau voices; it was Louis Comfort Tiffany who encouraged Bing to open his salon, and artists Will Bradley and Ethel Reed exhibited a Japonist simplicity that presented a strong, refined take on the Art Nouveau ideal. Louis Rhead was born in England but emigrated to the United States in 1883 at the age of 24, and quickly found himself celebrated both in the United States and in France, exhibiting his designs in the prestigious Salon des Cent in Paris in 1897.”
-Quoted from Flowering Lines: Rare Art Nouveau Graphics 1883-1911 by Thomas Negovan (2017)
Lithograph of Louis Rhead’s Prang’s Easter Publications, published in 1897 by Imprimerie Chaix, the printing house known for publishing the works of Belle Epoque master Jules Chéret. This example was printed with a plate of shimmering gold ink.
While this poster was printed in multiple sizes and formats, this 1897 edition of 25 strikes on Japon paper is the most desirable and extremely scarce edition. Japon paper allows inks to rest upon its surface rather than being absorbed by a more permeable paper stock. The rare, small format poster lithographs created at this time were printed using rich, dense, lead inks. This world-class example of lithography captures superior resolution and color-richness to that of its large-format counterpart.
This artwork is presented in archival rag mat and arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Notable museum collections containing this work include: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City (medium-format version on paper) (1984.1202.146)

Robert Gemmell Hutchinson
A native of Edinburgh, R. Gemmell Hutchison was born in 1855, and died on 22nd August 1936. After his school days he began work as a seal engraver, but soon left that occupation for painting and studied at the Art School of the Board of Manufactures.
He exhibited for the first time in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1878 and in the Royal Academy in 1881. A very early work was acquired by the Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland. An assiduous and prolific worker, Hutchison painted in oil, water, and pastel, and with varied subjects—figures, landscapes, the seashore, domestic interiors and occasionally portraits.
As indicated, his works from the first found a ready sale, and he is represented in the permanent collections of Oldham - Glasgow, Kelvingrove Gallery; Modern Arts Association, Edinburgh; Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery ; Bolton; Toronto, Canada; Fine Art Association, Canada ; Blackpool; Hamilton Trustees, Glasgow; Paisley...
