About the Item

Edition of 10 Signature label with name, title, materials, series, edition number and date. From Marcy Palmer's series, Unearthing. Marcy Palmer's Artist Statement: "The photographs in this series are about the space between the imagined and real. There is reference to constellation, a need for a controlled environment within a chaotic one, and a constructed world with natural elements. These works are filled with a tension between frustration and control and wonder and delight. Through these images, I could express my new and emotional journey of parenthood. Although the objects used in these images are not directly related to childhood/parenthood, the emotions evoked are. My experience as a parent to a young child lends itself to this tension, but the images relate to something larger than my own experience. The images are made by drawing and painting on a paper backdrop, shining light through holes in the backdrop, hanging wire, string, branches, and other elements to create shapes and lines in the compositions, which I often interact with. A slow shutter speed is used when capturing the images to show a sense of movement in many of them." Marcy Palmer grew up in the foothills region of the Adirondack Mountains in the historic city, Saratoga Springs, NY. As a child, she spent time exploring the outdoors which fueled her imagination and play. Marcy’s work explores themes of beauty, history, and social justice through the lens of photo history, nature, and science. She often approaches her work with questions that relate to research and considerations of how the materials in the work can further communicate her ideas. Integrating various approaches to image-making from contemporary to historical practices, Marcy is particularly influenced by the earliest practitioners of photography, and the Surrealist and Bauhaus movements. Recently, Marcy’s interests have focused on botanicals, and their various uses in medicine and healing, as methods of communication, and as symbols of the greater good. Marcy has an M.F.A. in Photography & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts and a B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College. Her work has been exhibited at various spaces including The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Center for Photographic Art, The Giffin Museum of Photography, The Ogden Museum of Art and other spaces. Her work has been written about in Lenscratch, The Boston Globe Sunday edition, D Magazine and other publications. Marcy released a book with Yoffy Press titled “You Are Eternity, You Are the Mirror” which was chosen as a Photo-Eye 2020 favorite photobook, The Luupe’s Favorite Woman-Made Books of the Year, and Deep Red Press’s Favorite Photobooks. She lives and works in Dallas, TX.
