About the Item
Fernando Natalici, Anya Phillips New York City, 1977:
Mudd Club co-founder and seminal Downtown art scene legend, Anya Phillips, photographed in between takes on the set of Amos Poe’s 'The Foreigner' by Fernando Natalici. Natalici captured Phillips in character using a 24mm wide-angle lens, curiously wearing a rubber diver’s suit. Phillips was a fashion designer, artist, dominatrix, stripper, actress, music manager, and photographer; a legendary scenester among downtown artists and celebrities. A rare revealing portrait of the late 70s and early 80s downtown punk and no wave icon before she died of cancer at the age of 26.
The Foreigner (d. Amos Poe 1977)
"The Foreigner" was a seminal cinematic work at the height of the 1970's American underground - a testament to the "punk" sensibility as manifested at CBGB during this time; as well as the the streets and lofts of SoHo and the Lower East Side art scene.
