About the Item

My Dear Watson 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 50" Framed Size: 52" x 65" Large Image Size: 56" x 75" Framed Size: 71" x 90" Artist Statement: I have always preferred to work in monochrome; it’s reductive and interpretive. With good printers that can achieve a wide and true breadth in the tonal range, the results in a portrait can be very powerful. Of course, some pictures can work better in colour, especially if the colour of the subject is what defines it, whether it be the orange in an orangutang or the red in a corvette.. . But with this lowland gorilla there is no debate; it must be a black and white portrait. I find the best results are when the lighting is soft and even, like on this cloudy morning. To see this image large is most affirming.. . As a proud Scot, I am honoured to be represented in the same stable as two of my peers from my homeland - Harry Benson and Albert Watson. They are paragons in their field and have consistently preferred to work in monochrome. I am proud to call Harry a dear friend.. . Albert Watson has always refused to be categorised and his subject matter has rich diversity. The one constant has been the artistic beauty of his black and white prints and I remember being transfixed by his work with a young Kate Moss in Marrakesh. The shot of her arched back is a masterpiece. . . Photographing this gorilla is a world removed from working with Kate, but Albert was in my mind we printed this. I am in awe of my printer - a portrait like this is the result of true collaboration. - David Yarrow

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken. It can be a slog up the mountain in the rainy season and even when you encounter a silverback, so many variables that are beyond anyone’s control have to work in the favor of the artist. Firstly, I prefer cloud cover, as a strong sun scattering shafts of intense light through the canopy of the rainforest is not a good bedfellow for portraiture. Secondly, I always prefer some degree of room to work with and 50% of my trips up that hill have not given me that opportunity - the vegetation is just too dense - on the ground and above. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. Thirdly, the silverback has to play ball - and that is not easy - in my experience the earlier the encounter in the day, the greater the opportunity of meeting an alert and compliant gorilla. This is the son of Kwitonda - a famous silverback who passed away recently and it is this son who is now the Governor...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "If someone else had taken this immersive photograph and asked me which country it had been captured in, Rwanda would be my immediate response. There are mountain gorillas in Uganda and DRC and head on encounters can happen anywhere, but it would take a great deal of persuasion and empirical evidence for me not to regard Rwanda as the odds on favourite location. The number of accessible silverbacks is just so much higher and in my experience the vegetation offers more opportunities for encounters in clearer areas. Cigar shots like this are improbable but not impossible. That is why we keep returning. Most treks are failures for us as we set the bar high, but once in a while it all comes together. Gorilla photography is tough - encounters are intense and normally occur in dense jungle with dappled light and little sense of place. The camera...
