Mark Beard
Tennessee Williams (Polaroid Transfer of American Playwright his Reflection)

1991

About the Item

image size: 8 x 10 inches Portrait of Tennessee Williams Unique Polaroid Transfer on 22 x 15 inch Rives BFK paper, unframed signed SM Beard in pencil on bottom right corner, unique print. This is one in a series of Polaroid transfers made by the artist Mark Beard using larger format Polaroid film in the mid 1990s. Mark Beard has been painting figures - the male figure, in particular - for the past four decades. His classic depiction of the male body is based on drawing and painting from live models as well as photographic images. For collectors who are already familiar with Beard's oil paintings, Beard's portrait of the American playwright, Tennessee Williams, does not convey the same level of sensuality as seen in his other works. However, there is still a great deal of intimacy in this photograph shot at close range, capturing Williams' averted gaze and mirrored reflection. Mark Beard, who had been close with Tennessee Williams, used the emulsion transfer process in 1991 on a photograph he had taken of Williams before his death. About the artist: Mark Beard is perhaps the most literal example of an artist pulled in so many different directions that he chose to “invent” six different personae in which to channel his overflowing energy and need for expression. Each painting style is radically different from the next, so it remains entirely believable that the work could stem from six completely different people of different time periods and different schools of thought. With a background in set design, Beard has always been one who could conjure total magic with anything available. For this exhibit, he returns as the beloved 20th century painter from England, Bruce Sargeant, featuring a parade of Arcadian scenes suggesting afternoons of young men sporting in the countryside, rowing, bicycling, hunting or wrestling. Clean shaven, well manicured youths pose casually, indulging every opportunity to display a titillating flex of stone-like musculature. Like modern Greek statues, Beard paints these prestigious figures oftentimes in pairs of twos and threes in a lazy state of beautiful passivity. Mark Beard keeps himself fresh with challenge, undertaking ambitious commissions and committing to weekly sketch sessions with live models in his Manhattan studio. The result of this dedicated practice is a stunning array of graphite and conte crayon drawings on Arches paper. Mark Beard has exhibited with Carrie Haddad Gallery for nearly twenty years and there has never been a dull moment. Mark Beard, born in 1956 in Salt Lake city, now lives in New York City. His works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University Art Museums; among many others. We would not be the least bit surprised to see new ‘personas’ emerge in the coming years.

The Gentleman Caller (Nick Simpson Sepia Victorian Styled Theatrical Photograph)
By Nick Simpson
Located in Hudson, NY
The Gentleman Caller (Nick Simpson Sepia Victorian Styled Theatrical Photograph) 12 x 16 inches, 21 x 26 inches framed in unique, vintage frame, anti-reflective glass, 8 ply off-white mat board. C-type archival print, edition of 7 This antique style figurative photograph was created by London based photographer, Nick Simpson, in 2013. This scene depicts 4 characters in period dress including a blindfolded man touching a woman's leg as two others peek on. Simpson's aesthetic is enhanced by his playfulness and nostalgia for the Victorian era. Simpson includes a slight patina around the sepia toned photograph's edge to accentuate its antique inspired quality. The Duratran print is paired with a dark wood frame. About the work: London based artist, Nick Simpson, is celebrated for his fictional series entitled The Bumforth Man Collection. The series consists of archival prints inspired by a mythical story concerning a quantity of glass photographic plates discovered in an old oak chest on the Bumforth Manor estate in rural England, the family home of the Gascoigne-Simpson's for over nine generations. These plates, which had laid gathering dust for over a hundred years, were supposedly the work of Simpson’s great grandfather, Samuel Heracles Gascoigne-Simpson, a disciple of William Henry Fox Talbot, commonly considered to be the father of photography. To bring this story to life, Simpson starts by building a set, authentically styled and dressed to re-create the Victorian photographic salons of the late 1900s. This becomes the stage upon which he places his eclectic choice of models and actors, all following his original tight narrative to create a richly detailed tableau. The scene is then captured in a single sitting using an original 1867 'Petzval' lens mounted on a mahogany plate camera...

Daisy in front of Trailer (Till Death do Us Part ) 48x47cm, + Soundtrack LP

Daisy in front of Trailer (Till Death do Us Part) - 2005 Edition 4/5, 48 x 47 cm. Analog C-Print, printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Paper, hand-printed by the artist, based on the Polaroid. Artist inventory 9250. Signature label and certificate. Not mounted. This Edition comes with the vinyl soundtrack of "Till Death Do Us Part" (directed by Stefanie Schneider), music by Daisy McCrackin. Stefanie Schneider’s Till Death Do Us Part or “There is Only the Desert for You.” BY DREW HAMMOND Stefanie Schneider’s Till Death to Us Part is a love narrative that comprises three elements: 1. A montage of still images shot and elaborated by means of her signature technique of using Polaroid formats with outdated and degraded film stock in natural light, with the resulting images rephotographed (by other means) enlarged and printed in such a way as to generate further distortions of the image. 2. Dated Super 8 film footage without a sound track and developed by the artist. 3. Recorded off-screen narration of texts written by the actors or photographic subjects, and selected by the artist. At the outset, this method presupposes a tension between still and moving image; between the conventions about the juxtaposition of such images in a moving image presentation; and, and a further tension between the work’s juxtaposition of sound and image, and the conventional relationship between sound and image that occurs in the majority of films. But Till Death Do Us Part also conduces to an implied synthesis of still and moving image by the manner in which the artist edits or cuts the work. First, she imposes a rigorous criterion of selection, whether to render a section as a still or moving image. The predominance of still images is neither an arbitrary residue of her background as a still photographer—in fact she has years of background in film projects; nor is it a capricious reaction against moving picture convention that demands more moving images than stills. Instead, the number of still images has a direct thematic relation to the fabric of the love story in the following sense. Stills, by definition, have a very different relationship to time than do moving images. The unedited moving shot occurs in real-time, and the edited moving shot, despite its artificial rendering of time, all too often affords the viewer an even greater illusion of experiencing reality as it unfolds. It is self-evident that moving images overtly mimic the temporal dynamic of reality. Frozen in time—at least overtly—still photographic images pose a radical tension with real time. This tension is all the more heightened by their “real” content, by the recording aspect of their constitution. But precisely because they seem to suspend time, they more naturally evoke a sense of the past and of its inherent nostalgia. In this way, they are often more readily evocative of other states of experience of the real, if we properly include in the real our own experience of the past through memory, and its inherent emotions. This attribute of stills is the real criterion of their selection in Til Death...
