The Chicks and Chicks series is part of my Desert Living Project, which explores all aspects of organic living—growing your own food, self-sustainability, and recognizing the beauty and welfare of farm animals. The project aims to reconnect human needs with their sources, bringing the full circle of industrialization back to the homestead.
Stefanie Schneider’s work immerses the viewer in scintillating narratives set in the American West, blending reality with elusive super-reality. Her photographic sequences create atmospheric scenes for loosely woven storylines, featuring phantasmagorical characters.
Schneider uses the chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film, where vibrant colors explode across the image, destabilizing the photograph’s commitment to reality. This process induces her subjects into trance-like dreamscapes. Much like the flickering sequences of old road movies, her images seem to evaporate before any conclusions can be drawn, maintaining an ephemeral quality. These images embody a continuous interplay of dream, desire, fact, and fiction, resisting a fixed reality.
Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design from the Folkwang Hochschule Essen, Germany. Her work has been featured in prestigious venues such as the Museum for Photography Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation Berlin, the Institute for New Media Frankfurt, Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, and Foto-Triennale Esslingen.
