Michael Massaia is a fine art photographer and printmaker who has spent the past ten years documenting areas and objects that never extend too far from his front door. Isolation, disconnection, and an attempt to put a spotlight on the ordinary are the constants in all of his work. He focuses primarily on large format black-and-white film, utilizing a variety of highly modified proprietary analog and digital printing techniques. Massaia works alone and is the sole craftsman from the instant the negative is exposed to the moment the final print is made. Michael Massaia could never relate to conventional portraiture, but wanted to find a way to capture people on film and in print with the perfection of studio shots. His intention with this project was to capture people in what he considered to be perfect unassuming poses (poses that could never be posed). Massaia shot all of the images very close to the subjects while they were sunbathing or sleeping in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow (usually only a few feet away) and would simply wait for the moment when the subject appeared to completely surrender to their environment. Not having the luxury of communication with the subject, he was forced to be extremely patient in order to obtain the desired results. Massaia makes gold-toned silver gelatin prints by hand for all of the images, where the surrounding grass is severely “burnt in” to isolate, thus giving the look of suspension to the subject. The majority of the images were created in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow, while a few were created in other small parks in the city.

"Feels Good" Polar Bear Photograph - Signed and Numbered Limited Edition
By Thomas Mangelsen
Located in Soquel, CA
Signed and numbered limited edition photograph of a polar bear by Thomas Mangelsen (American, b. 1945). Signed "Thomas Mangelsen" in the lower right corner and numbered "794/950" in the lower left corner. This particular image is no longer produced. Presented in a double mat of light grey and tan, in a wood frame. Image size: approx. 21"H x 31"W Renowned American nature and wildlife photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen (American, b. 1945) has traveled throughout the natural world for over 40 years observing and photographing the Earth’s last great wild places. A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, Tom transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Tom continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. In 1970 Mangelsen moved to Nederland, Colorado. He spent two years living in the Rocky Mountains in an old mining shack without electricity or running water with his English setter, black lab and raccoon. Tom continued to work on his photography and studied arctic alpine ecology at the University of Colorado’s Mountain Research Station near Nederland. There he met Bert Kempers, a CU film producer, who later hired Tom as cinematographer and film editor for his company Westwind Productions, making educational and nature documentaries. Tom longed...
