This was a series about Kuwaiti, Arab woman or men dressed in Burka's from up close it appears completely abstract from a bit of a distance an image emerges.
Jack Butler was a Professor of Art at California State University Los Angeles from 1988 to 2010. He received his Master of Arts degree from California State University Los Angeles in 1972 and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA in 1979. He was a dedicated teacher from 1971 to 2010 and taught at numerous educational institutions including California State University Los Angeles, the University of California, Riverside, UCLA Extension, Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Southwest College and was a visiting instructor at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.
He has participated in approximately one hundred exhibitions during that time including sixteen solo exhibitions. His work has been shown at such institutions as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fahey / Klein Gallery, Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Art, Gallery Min in Tokyo, Japan, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Osaka, Japan, Photo-Tableau in Paris, France, the Photographers Gallery in London England, the Kansas City Art Institute, The Friends of Photography Ansel Adams Center, the Laguna Beach Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, Sala Arcs Gallery, Barcelona, Spain, the California Museum of Photography, the Center of Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the Corcoran Gallery, Boston Mass., and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and was represented by the former Sherry Frumkin Gallery.

Recent publications include catalogs from the exhibition "Transfictions" at the Fisher Gallery USC and the exhibition "COLA 2004" at Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery as well as “The Polaroid Years, Instant Photography and Experimentation”, The Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College 2013.
During his career he has been involved in numerous workshops and lectures and has curated numerous exhibitions. He has participated in a Distinguished Artists Forum, 20x24 Polaroid Project in 1989 and was supported the by Polaroid Corporation to work on the 20x24 Polaroid camera in New York Studio in 1990 and again in 1998. Polaroid Corporation was also instrumental in assisting with the production of his project Hot Rod "Kulture / Culture.” He was also a recipient of a SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1980, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (major individual grant) in 1981 and received a City of Los Angeles Individual Artists Fellowship (COLA Grant) in 2004.
His work is included in such collections as the Los Angeles County Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, California Museum of Photography, Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts UCLA, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture, Seattle Art Museum, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art, Japan, the Graham and Susan Nash Collection, the Aaron Spelling Collection as well as numerous other private collections. The Season of the Witch was shot for Agent Provocateur in May 2009 at Dorney court. It was commissioned by Joe Corre and Serena Rees the original owners. Joe and I had been looking at Hogarth's etchings for A Rakes Progress, which later became an opera by Stravinski depicting the decline of Tom Rakewell, “For idle hearts and hands and minds the Devil finds work to do.” We decided we would create our own version of Bedlam but with Agent Provocateurs seductive point of view.
The challenge was to shoot their whole collection, over thirty-five pieces of lingerie and put them into one image. Despite the misconception that it is a huge multi composition in photoshop, the truth is, it isn’t. Camera position locked off and working to a very specific layout conceived with all the girls from the shop, the picture is assembled in three parts. The right-hand side of the image using our ten models and extras was shot first, then as individual scenarios. Then came the balcony shot as they changed costumes to shoot the left-hand side. Fenton Bailey son of David played Tom, and Chloe Hayward his prospective wife who stumble into the witches coven, a twisted version of The Rocky Horror show.
The witches included Alice de Lal, Daisy Lowe, Peaches Geldof, Marina Jameson, Raquel Nave, Awoui, Alex Jenny and Paz de la Huerta from Broadwalk Empire. Charlie Anderson brought a rack of costumes which everyone was persuaded to dress up in, whether it was the snake wrangler, who at one point “mislaid” a nine-foot boa constrictor, photo assistants, strip club doormen, some random punks we found roaming the streets of Windsor and the entire hair and makeup team. Joe Corre, son of Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood made a cameo performance in all four tableaus and can be seen behind the chandelier with all the girls from their offices all suitably attired. We actually flew the owl across the set but the wolf that belonged to the owner of the house was brought in and shot separately.
On my first presentation of the artwork there was a degree of disapproval, perhaps cutting the brides throat was a tad over the top but Joes only reaction was “ couldn’t we have a bloody great big pentagram painted on the floor?” I returned to my office that afternoon and duly painted the floorboards with the devil's insignia which was then comped onto the shot. With productions like this, so many people go unmentioned such as my producer Jenny, Jess Morris, Sarah Shotton, Kirstin Piggott and Eamonn Hughes on hair and make up my dear friend Peter Smith who styled all the food, and most importantly my partners in crime Lee Stuart who assembled everything without any hesitation and a huge degree of inspiration, and Mark Townsend who balanced the light and made the 5x4 plate camera...

This was a series about Kuwaiti, Arab woman or men dressed in Burka's from up close it appears completely abstract from a bit of a distance an image emerges.
Jack Butler was a Professor of Art at California State University Los Angeles from 1988 to 2010. He received his Master of Arts degree from California State University Los Angeles in 1972 and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA in 1979. He was a dedicated teacher from 1971 to 2010 and taught at numerous educational institutions including California State University Los Angeles, the University of California, Riverside, UCLA Extension, Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Southwest College and was a visiting instructor at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.
He has participated in approximately one hundred exhibitions during that time including sixteen solo exhibitions. His work has been shown at such institutions as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fahey / Klein Gallery, Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Art, Gallery Min in Tokyo, Japan, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Osaka, Japan, Photo-Tableau in Paris, France, the Photographers Gallery in London England, the Kansas City Art Institute, The Friends of Photography Ansel Adams Center, the Laguna Beach Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, Sala Arcs Gallery, Barcelona, Spain, the California Museum of Photography, the Center of Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the Corcoran Gallery, Boston Mass., and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and was represented by the former Sherry Frumkin Gallery.
He has been published in numerous books and catalogs. These include publications from such seminal exhibitions as “ Proof: Los Angeles Art and the Photograph 1960-1980”, “Photography and Art: Interactions Since 1946”, “Photography and Language” and “Attitudes: Photography in the Seventies” as well as having a catalog of his work published by Min Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. Recent publications include catalogs from the exhibition "Transfictions" at the Fisher Gallery USC and the exhibition "COLA 2004" at Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery as well as “The Polaroid Years, Instant Photography and Experimentation”, The Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College 2013.
During his career he has been involved in numerous workshops and lectures and has curated numerous exhibitions. He has participated in a Distinguished Artists Forum, 20x24 Polaroid Project in 1989 and was supported the by Polaroid Corporation to work on the 20x24 Polaroid camera in New York Studio in 1990 and again in 1998. Polaroid Corporation was also instrumental in assisting with the production of his project Hot Rod "Kulture / Culture.” He was also a recipient of a SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1980, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (major individual grant) in 1981 and received a City of Los Angeles Individual Artists Fellowship (COLA Grant) in 2004.
His work is included in such collections as the Los Angeles County Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, California Museum of Photography, Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts UCLA, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture, Seattle Art Museum, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art, Japan, the Graham and Susan Nash Collection, the Aaron Spelling Collection as well as numerous other private collections. In Southern California, 2010 is a perfect example of this process of seeing. When I first noticed this scene, it was a simple mural of a whale on a wall. After looking at it for a while I realized that by eliminating the sky and foreground from the image the whale now had an undulating rhythm and movement.
In another image Restaurant Hostess, Palm Beach, FL 2012, I would go to this restaurant every week and sit in the bar behind the reception area. One day, I turned around and saw the back of a woman. Through this process of deductive framing, the image became one of dark shadows rhythmically trickling down her back interwoven with the tattoo of the lizard.
David Saxe was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada in 1943 and studied fine art at l’ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal. A fiercely original photographer, Miles Aldridge (*1964, Great Britain) is best known for the technicolor dream-like worlds he creates and the glamorous, beautiful women who inhabit them. Aldridge creates ultra-cinematic images, drawing inspiration from film directors such as David Lynch and Federico Fellini as well as the psychedelic graphic design of his father, Alan Aldridge.
Staged to perfection the stars of Aldridge’s surrealistic stories and technicolour dream-like worlds are glamorous, beautiful women. He captures his subjects in a state of dramatic contemplation, making them more complicated and intriguing than simply beautiful. The women’s immaculate appearance and blank expression leave room for interpretation and, like a mirror for Aldridge’s works at large, hint with a touch of dark humour at the perfected façade of fashion’s glamour and the need for idealised beauty. Moreover, his works are characterized by vivid, fluorescent colours as well as the Hollywood lighting and perfectionist attention to detail.
