About the Item
From Weehawken, New Jersey, we see the vintage mid-town Manhattan skyline as it appeared in the winter of 1974. In the foreground, a perfectly positioned white cruise ship sprouts smoke from its smokestack as it passes by. The ship gives scale to the buildings and makes a statement about the ephemeral and the permanent. The image is shrouded in a yellow-greenish tone derived from the setting sun and also from the light green filter that Photographer Mitchell Funk placed over the lens. In the early 1970's Mitchell Funk broke away from traditional color photography and embraced the idea of innovating with color and light.
The work is signed, numbered 3/15, dated lower right recto - printed later. unframed, Other sizes are available. The fine art photograph is unframed and is printed on fine art Hahnemuhle paper.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
