Mark Sink, a Denver-based photographer, had a formative experience in the 1980s working alongside several influential artists in New York City. During this period, he collaborated with Robert Mapplethorpe, known for his bold and intimate portraits, whose work deeply influenced Sink's approach to human subjects. He also worked with Keith Haring, whose vibrant, socially engaged art inspired Sink’s exploration of color and dynamic space in photography. Additionally, Sink was exposed to the creative atmosphere of Andy Warhol's Factory, where he absorbed Warhol’s unique approach to celebrity culture and mass production, shaping his understanding of the art-world persona. Sink also collaborated with Cindy Sherman, whose conceptual photography focused on identity and self-representation, influencing Sink's own exploration of these themes in portraiture. Sink’s collaborations with these and other prominent artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Laurie Anderson provided him with a rich artistic foundation. Their innovative work encouraged Sink to experiment with different photographic techniques and to blend fine art, performance, and conceptual photography, a direction that would define much of his career. These experiences in New York City helped shape Sink’s artistic vision, which continues to push the boundaries of traditional photography while exploring identity, memory, and the human experience.

ABOUT:
For the last two years Mark and Kristen have collaborated using one of the earliest photographic methods, collodion wet plate to create ambrotypes on glass and tintypes on aluminum. They use a 1860 style view camera to create one-of-a-kind images, which become windows into an intimate, romantic, and beautiful world of faces, still lives, nudes, and landscapes. In this demanding process, the collodion coated tin or glass plates are immersed in a silver nitrate solution, and then they must be exposed in the camera and developed while still wet. Serendipitous flaws and beautiful imperfections are an inevitable part of this imprecise hands-on process.
This show includes a combination of 24 tintypes and ambrotypes, which are 8x10 and smaller in size. Their intimate sizes ask the viewers to look closer and spend more time with these photographs to fully appreciate their power. — A welcome antidote to today's nonstop, ¬instantaneous imagery. Paradoxically, this intersection of past and present gives these pieces an unmistakably contemporary feel. The two collaborators deliberately play up the ambiguity of time.
The nudes (some recalling E.J. Bellocq's alluring portraits of New Orleans prostitutes in 1912) are suffused with freshness and sensuality, even eroticism at times, with nearly all of them coming off as refined rather than crass.
Fredrick Scott Archer developed the collodion process in 1851. Artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, William Henry Jackson and Civil War photographer Mathew Brady used the process, due to its cost and versatility advantages. In addition Sink and Hatgi’s work can also be seen revived in contemporary artists work...

ABOUT:
In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way.
This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat...
