About the Item

Shani Mootoo grew up in this house in Trinidad. She returned as an adult and created a photographic memoir of its interior in her ‘History Revisited’ series. Her images of these rooms are not curated. This is the foyer. A book shelf cluttered with a variety of objects sits in the center frame. Family portraits hang above it on the wall, and the viewer sees a glimpse of two other rooms: dark wood cabinets in the dining room, a mannequin in a bedroom. Mootoo’s photos are nostalgic in that they chronicle how time and the generations who have lived here have transformed these spaces. “It is there in that house that I see my roots and I wanted to record the marks on it before time takes it away forever.” Shani Mootoo This framed and matted giclee print is editioned, 1/10. Print size is 12 x 18 inches. It is also available in two larger sizes, 16 x 24 (framed 25 x 33 inches, edition of 8, $2,600); and 21 x 31.5 inches (30.5 x 40 inches framed, edition of 5, $3,400). An accomplished writer, filmmaker, painter and photographer Shani Mootoo earned a BFA from the University of Western Ontario, and an MA in English from the University of Guelph. Her novels have been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Giller Prize. Mootoo's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, most notably at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen’s Museum in NYC, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and at the Venice Biennale. Shani Mootoo was born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad. She lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario.
