About the Item

This exceptional lithograph, Sans titre (Untitled) after Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966), was published in Derriere le Miroir, No. 98, 1957. Created during one of Giacometti’s most prolific decades, this work embodies his singular exploration of the human form and spatial perception. Through delicate yet decisive lines, Giacometti captures an almost metaphysical presence—figures that seem to flicker between existence and disappearance. This composition reflects the artist’s fascination with the tension between materiality and the void, a hallmark of his mature style. Lithograph on velin paper. Paper Size: 15 × 11 inches (38.1 × 27.9 cm). Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Notes: From the folio Derriere le Miroir, No. 98, 1957. Published by Aime Maeght, Editeur, Paris; printed by Editions Pierre a Feu, Galerie Maeght, Paris, 1957. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French): Taken from this issue of “Behind the Mirror,” the original edition consisted of examples on velin de Rives. The lithographs were printed in the ateliers of Maeght Editeur, Paris, with texts accompanying Giacometti’s exhibition at Galerie Maeght in 1957. Artwork details: Artist: After Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) Title: Sans titre (Untitled) Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 × 11 inches (38.1 × 27.9 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1957 Publisher: Aime Maeght, Editeur, Paris Printer: Editions Pierre a Feu, Galerie Maeght, Paris Condition: Well preserved condition, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Derriere le Miroir, No. 98, 1957 Notes on publication: Derriere le Miroir (“Behind the Mirror”), founded by Aime Maeght in 1946, was one of the 20th century’s most influential art publications, pairing original lithographs with critical essays and poetry to accompany exhibitions at Galerie Maeght in Paris. The 1957 issue, No. 98, was dedicated to Alberto Giacometti, capturing his existential vision of the human condition at the height of his artistic maturity. During this period, Giacometti’s lithographs paralleled his sculptures in their stark, linear precision and psychological depth. The reduction of form to its essential gestures—isolated, elongated, and often spectral—became a visual metaphor for the fragility of human existence. The Derriere le Miroir issue coincided with Giacometti’s major exhibition at Galerie Maeght, solidifying his relationship with the Maeght family and his lasting influence within postwar European art. About the artist: Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draftsman, and printmaker whose work profoundly shaped modern art. After studying under Antoine Bourdelle in Paris, Giacometti became associated with the Surrealists, including artists such as Max Ernst, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso. Following World War II, he developed the hauntingly attenuated figures that became his signature—expressions of existential solitude and the search for human essence. His work is represented in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), and Centre Pompidou (Paris). In 2015, Giacometti’s sculpture L’Homme au doigt (Pointing Man) sold for $141.3 million USD at Christie’s New York, setting the world record for the artist and the highest price ever achieved for a sculpture.
