About the Publication:
Douze Contemporains (Twelve Contemporaries), published in 1959 by Editions d'art du lion in collaboration with Boston Book and Art Shop, Inc., stands as a masterwork of mid-century French printmaking, uniting the visions of leading modern artists through a harmonious portfolio of lithographs and pochoirs. The album exemplifies Jacomets meticulous approach to color separation and hand-stenciled execution, preserving the tonal richness and structural clarity of each composition. Issued in a significant edition of numbered and non-commerce impressions, the publication reflects the vibrancy of postwar artistic culture and the ateliers central role in advancing modern printmaking.
About the Artist:
Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor whose hauntingly elegant portraits, iconic nudes, and lyrical distortions of the human form made him one of the most recognizable and influential figures in modern art. Born in Livorno and later working in Paris at the height of early 20th-century innovation, Modigliani developed a profoundly personal visual language that drew on the breakthroughs of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, while remaining independent of any single artistic movement. His elongated figures, almond-shaped eyes, sculptural symmetry, and sensual linearity synthesized elements of African and Cycladic sculpture, Italian Renaissance draftsmanship, Symbolism, and Fauvism into a style instantly identifiable as his own. Immersed in the cultural ferment of Montparnasse, he worked alongside Chaim Soutine, Moise Kisling, Diego Rivera, Gino Severini, Constantin Brancusi, and Jacques Lipchitz, and although his life was tragically brief, his influence was monumental—seen in the sculptural figuration of Alberto Giacometti, the neoclassical portraits of Pablo Picasso, the psychological distortion of Francis Bacon, and the work of contemporary figurative painters who continue to look to Modigliani for his unparalleled fusion of elegance, intimacy, and expressive form. His paintings and sculptures are held in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum, the Barnes Foundation, and the Phillips Collection, confirming his status as a foundational figure of modernism. His market continues to reflect this significance, with the highest auction record achieved when Nu Couche sold for 170,405,000 USD at Christie's New York on May 9, 2018—one of the highest prices ever paid for a work of art and a powerful testament to Modigliani's enduring global legacy.
