About the Publication:
Douze Contemporains (Twelve Contemporaries), published in 1959 by Editions d'art du lion in collaboration with Boston Book and Art Shop, Inc., stands as a masterwork of mid-century French printmaking, uniting the visions of leading modern artists through a harmonious portfolio of lithographs and pochoirs. The album exemplifies Jacomet's meticulous approach to color separation and hand-stenciled execution, preserving the tonal richness and structural clarity of each composition. Issued in a significant edition of numbered and non-commerce impressions, the publication reflects the vibrancy of postwar artistic culture and the atelier's central role in advancing modern printmaking.
About the Artist:
Andre Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founding fathers of Fauvism whose radical use of pure color and simplified form redefined modern art in the early 20th century. Born in Chatou, near Paris, Derain initially studied engineering before turning to painting, where his collaboration with Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck ignited a revolution in color and expression. His early landscapes of Collioure and London burst with vibrancy and emotional energy, marking a decisive break from Impressionism and establishing him as a leading innovator of the avant-garde. Drawing inspiration from Paul Cezanne's structure, Paul Gauguin's color harmonies, and the optical theories of Georges Seurat, Derain developed a style that balanced intensity and order, bridging Fauvism and the emerging currents of Cubism. Throughout his career, he moved among the great creative minds of modernism, including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, sharing with them a commitment to experimentation and form. Derain's later work evolved toward classical composition and sculptural clarity, influencing generations of artists who sought to reconcile tradition with modern innovation—from early abstractionists to postwar colorists and Neo-Expressionists. Today, his paintings remain cornerstones of museum and private collections worldwide for their brilliance, historical significance, and enduring beauty. The artist's highest auction record was achieved by Arbres a Collioure (1905), which sold for 16,281,250 GBP (approximately 24 million USD) at Sotheby's, London, on June 22, 2010.
